I'm loading the Lyman 311041 in my 7.62x39 Remington 799 and am wondering if anyone has tried this combination. The only load I've tried so far involved 5744 and the results were hardly stellar @ 50 yards. I just took a SWAG and loaded 5 rounds @ 14.0, 14.5,15.0 and 15.5 grains respectively. There were no pressure signs present so perhaps the load is too light any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

14.0 Grain group - 3 shots one group, 2 shots 2nd group - .910" CTC

14.5 Grain group - 2.069"

15.0 Grain Group - 1.882"

15.5 Grain Group - 1.848"

From the looks of the bottom two targets I'd check my barrel pressure out. It might be a tad too much.

Best load with AA5744 was 160 gr. Lee boolit with 18grs. --- pressure was ok but would not reliably cycle my SKS at 18.5 grs. group opened up --- Mag

Whats the groove diameter of the 799 bore, the throat diameter, the twist and what are you sizing the 311041s at?

Herb,

From the looks of your targets, your bullet hardness failing at that level. Try 13 and 13.5 grains.

But first, run a brush through it a couple of times and a dry patch, because I will bet you leaded slightly.

With that case capacity, I would get a can of IMR 4198 and sleep with it under my pillow.

Larry.....bore diameter is .308, twist either 1 in 9 1/4 or 9 1/2 noc chamber cast so throat diameter unknown.

Bass........correct on the hint of leading, will try 13 and 13.5. On the subject of 4198 what would you suggest for a starting load??

Herb,

I would guess it will be about 2 grains more than what you work out with the 5744. It's nice and bulky. My point was to get you to about 60% case capacity to minimize position sensitivity. You may need 3031 which should be another 2 grains different. Go bulky young man, go bulky. If you had a 30-06 as an example, you might be limited to 5744 or 4759 without filler. That's the advantage to the smaller case. Flexibility.

Remember, if you want slightly more velocity, go to a magnum pistol primer. Should allow you another grain.

Let us know how you come out.

The experiment continues.........I dropped the load back to 13 and 13.5 grains of 5744. The 13 grain load was nothing to brag about, but the 13.5 shows a little promise.......it's the right hand target and was shot @ 100 yards ...8 of the 9 shots fired went into 1.828 ". I'll try 15 and 16 grains of 4198 next per Bass's suggestion.

Herb,

Yea. 1/2 grain is simply too narrow a range for me. I would want a powder slow enough that it was good for at least a grain. That would cover throwing charges instead of weighing, bullet weight variation, and some other variables.

The reason that it is so narrow is the small case capacity and the shoulder allowing it to burn way to fast / hot aided by that twist rate. Either that or your bullets are just way too soft for the conditions you set up.

Shot the 4198 load last evening with 15 and 16 grains @ 100 yards. The left target is 15 grains...9 rounds in 2.430" the best 7 went 1.418" the right target is all over the map. This is an interesting experiment, perhaps I'll drop back 1/2 a grain with the 4198 and see what happens.
