The band/base that the front sight is mounted on is loose on the barrel. Is there a screw or something under the sight that will let me tighten up the band/base?

I've got an 1895 Chilean and all it has is a front sight block that is sweated to the barrel. I yours a carbine or altered rifle? No matter, I believe most if not all of those military sight mounting bands are press fit then sweated in place.

Most have a small screw under the sight blade in the dovetail base.

This is what I suspected. The band is not sweated on.

My Chilean had a screw in the block under the blade. This engaged a dimple in the barrel.
