Hey all.
I have only been reloading shotguns for a while, but I am enjoying it. Yesterday I took my gun guy a pig for helping me out and he had a Winchester single shot 16 gauge for sale in fair shape but real tight for 150.00 and I just couldn't leave it there. Anyone have any suggestions for the mighty 16 gauge? I would only really use #6 shot and maybe a couple #4Buck loads. This has a 2 3/4 inch chamber only.

i don't have much advice except I want to build a single shot muzzy using a 16 barrel. My dad bought a win 12 in 16 gauge in the thirties and hit every thing he shot at with two #6 and a #4 in mag. He rarely needed a second shot at pheasants. He harvested 21 deer with slugs and the gun shoots 5 inch groups at 100 yards. My son now has the gun and he wants to take a deer with it for old times sake. The longest shot my dad made was 220 yards at a deer running straight away on a snowy railroad track. He said he saw the slug land in the snow and he kept raising the sight and shooting and his last shot(7 shell capacity with plug out) hit the deer and it tumbled down into a ditch. He ran down and finished it off with a shot in the neck. When the drive( friends walking thru woods to move deer) came to him they walked back to his empty shells and it was 220 steps. Was it ethical, no but many of his deer he shot from 50 to 100 yards. So I think a 16 bore with a roundball might be a fun blackpowder gun.

win 37? You may want another gun. It will let you know, they dont like to be shot just looked at.Thats why most have a split pistol grip.
As for loading a MEC 600 with adjustable charge bar.
After you price a box of factory shells you will like reloading a lot more.
Last that gun was not made to shoot steel shot.
If its a 32full take a bottle of asprin with you

This is a model 37 Steelbuilt. This one has obviously been shot quite a bit but still locks up tighter than water tight. This one has a 34 inch barrel. No split in the pistol grip. Well, yet....

The vast majority of hulls that I have been able to get have been the black Remington hulls. Having said that, I have had great luck using a Lee Load All 2 to reload these. If you have a LLA2 then the conversion kits are pretty inexpensive.

If you want to go the whole hog for 16 gauge loading, check out Ballistic Products Inc. http://www.ballisticproducts.com/ and get their 16 gauge loading manual. Beware, once you get one 16 and knock a few upland birds down with it, you'll get a craving for another.

My dad has an ancient 16 gauge Remington SxS and he is a dove SNIPER. I mean really. He can knock em down at an incredible range. I have never had another shotgun act like that. This is part of the reason I bought this single. I just have to know if it is the weapon, loads, or what. I am not gonna start telling tales out of school, but I have never had a shotgun in 12 or 20 gauge that will kill birds out as far as dad can with that double. And when I shoot it, I also can increase my range by about 20 yards or so over my 12 gauges with any choke. And I have bought extended chokes, specialty chokes and all that jazz and still cant outshoot that double 16.

The 1 oz. load in the 16 supposedly has magical properties because it is a "square" load, where the depth of the shot in the shell is equal to the width of the bore. This supposedly translates into a better shot string (or shot "cloud") that results in more hits on flying game. True? I dunno. I do know my Browning Sweet 16 "Carries like a 20 and hits like a 12."

Lets see in the past I had a 16 gauge in a Winchester Model 12 , a Browning A5 Sweet Sixteen, a pair of Browning Citori O/U's and a pair of Parker SxS's .

At the moment I have 16's in a Remington 48 semi auto , a Fox AH SxS , a LeFever SxS , a Parker GH SxS , a Kerner SxS and three drillings .

I load birdshot in #4 , #6 and #8 as well as #1 Buck .

My Parker GH has damascus barrels so I keep ALL my handloads at a level I consider safe in that gun , I do however have a small supply of Federal factory #1 buck and slugs as well as some Winchester factory slugs .

My shotgun loading has pretty much evolved into the 10 and 16 gauge although I am set up now for the 12 , 20 and 410 as well .

Now all I need is a nice old Parker in 28 gauge and perhaps another in 8 gauge to have them all covered !

I like the 16 ga. and have several. Did recently buy a Winchester 310 12 ga. 36" barrel shot it a couple of times and decided it would be better as a wall hanger. Kick like a Mule, thought this should be a 16 ga. might be friendlier then. Plenty of info. out there on the 16's and loading eqpt. can be had often for less than the other ga's. Shame it is a nice ga.

I have quite a few 16 gauge guns. Started maybe 15 years ago with one from my daughters baby sitter and have picked them up here and there on occasion. I have a huge amount of 5 round box slugs and maybe 3 cases of factory loaded birdshot. I wish I would have keep all the hulls I have left on the ground over the years since I now reload shotshells and recently purchased the better shotmaker. I purchased the 16 Gauge load manual from Ballistic Products and will purchase hulls and wads soon.

Love the 16 - I also have an AH Fox SxS and a Rem 1100. The Ballistic Products hulls are really good also. I just got a box of the Magtech brass shells - I'm on the lookout for an old Belgian hammer gun in 16 to shoot black powder in...

THE most ballistically efficient shotshell loads are the ,

10 gauge with an ounce and a quarter of shot (2 7/8")

16 gauge with an ounce of shot

28 gauge with 3/4 ounce of shot

And those happen to be my 3 favourite gauges .

You gonna get me in trouble. I sure want a pair of those lace up Danners. I might need a full wool suit for upland hunting. If I can look like a gentleman does that make me one? Seriously, I like the pictures of the older men in their suits holding those fancy doubles. Reminds me of a better time and makes me dream of what it was like. Makes me wish I had been able to hunt with my Grandad more.
Heck, look at the tintype in my avatar of my Grandfather when he was a teenager. He used to coonhunt with his friends a lot. He is the second from the right.

I question whether it's really worth it !

You can buy a good many factory slug loads for what the mold costs .

Makes no difference to me !

I still think one can buy a heck of alot of Federal or Winchester Foster type slugs for what one NOE 4 or 6 cavity mold will cost .

.600 diameter (360gr = just under 7/8oz) Lead Ball with a Shotcup wad (.060) over 19gr of Universal in a Federal shell.
The mold is under $21. THat less than 3 boxes (15 slugs) of Remington/Winchester or Federal Foster slugs at most Wal-Marts.
