Folks, I've been scouring the net for mention of 357/44 Bain and Davis stuff, and now I am looking for articles on the similar 357/44 Bobcat.

I found and bought the Guns&Ammo Mar 1977 for the "Bobcat .357/.44 Magnum" article by Dr. Ralph C. Glaze. Now I am looking for a 1980s era edition of "Shooting Times". There are a few scattered mentions of "Bob Booth", but at this point, nothing more. I have Lee Martin's ".357 Bain & Davis" pdf off the net, and it shows it, but since it is a similar development, the article does not go into depth.

Any further info on the Bobcat 357/44 cartridge would be appreciated.

I didn't find the articles you were seeking, but I found this entry on a Smith & Wesson forum:

For those of you not familiar...The .357/44 Bobcat is sort of like a Bain & Davis; only different.

Start with a .44 magnum case. Now neck it down to .357. Add a polymer collar over the bottle neck portion of the case so it can fit in an unaltered .44 cylinder.

Now drop said .44 cylinder into a S&W model 27 or 28, and you have, essentially a .357 Bain & Davis without permanently modifying your 27 or 28.

So, what I'm wondering is; Anyone here have any experience with such a conversion? Anyone know of a source for the polymer collars?

I have a set of dies and I have access to an extra .44 cylinder. What I'm worried about is:

My 27 already has a bit of flame cutting, and I'm thinking the .357 Bobcat would seriously exacerbate that problem. Is there anyone who could offer a differing opinion?

My other problem is, my 27 is a 4" and I really think the .357/44 Bobcat would be at it's best with at least a 6" barrel.

Othere commenters in the forum felt that the Bobcat didn't work.

Whether it worked or not is sorta mooted by the need for the collars. I saw where someone was looking to get a bunch made up with injection moulding, another suggestion was using a chamber insert a-la like the 308 in a 30-06 chamber (hope the silver solder or TIG welding is top-flight).

I have tamped my curiosity down to finding out any loads for the Bobcat, as I expect them to be close to the B&D.

My copy just came in. Scan to follow, but the Bobcat cylinder is bored out to accept the 44 mag body, but the chamber is not bored straight through. The mouth of the cylinder is still .357

Powders used are the old reliables, W296, H110, Blue Dot, 2400. Velocities for the Bobcat - 90 grain @2,050 up to 158 gr @1,685 in a 6 1/2 inch revolver.

Oooh, next story is "Barn Pigeons, Gunner's Delight". Pigeons are at least twice if not three times bigger than a dove, and clean easier than a dove. Still a bit more trouble than a woodcock, but worth it.
