Is the 617 the ultimate 22 handgun? I'm thinking that it is, due to reliability, accuracy, and the fact that it would be a great training gun that would simulate a full size revolver. What do actual 617 owners think?

Looks just like the Awesome 686. The stainless 6" is the Bomb...

I don't know about being the "ultimate," but as a dyed in the wool revolver guy, they are a lot of fun to shoot.

Not sure about the 617, but my 6" M 17 is a big disappointment. Any of my Ruger std autos is
more accurate. Nothing ever shoots under 2.5" at 25 yds, and I can swap over to a Ruger and
shoot 1-1.2" right behind it. Back to the M17 and 2.5 or 3" groups, even though I have spent
a lot of time trying different ammo, including Pistol Target ammo of several types. Nice
finish, great trigger, great sights.

I have many good and some great revolvers, but my M17-3 is a disappointment. Not horrible, but
I just expected better. I have a very old 22/32 I-frame (just like the Bekeart) that will out
shoot it every time. Beautiful gun, just doesn't meet my standards for accuracy.

Maybe the current 617s are better, hope so.

My 617, 6 inch, is one of the few guns I own that will NEVER be sold. Liked it so much bought my son one was well. Both are the 10 shot versions. My brother shot mine for about an hour at the range and went to the gun store and bought one himself. If I miss it is my fault, not the revolvers.
It is a proven winner.

Maybe not the total "ultimate" but I do love my 517 four-incher. If I ever feel the need to 'cull the herd', it'll way down toward the bottom of the list.

Must've been a popular finish...I used that same Formica for both my 'working' desk and computer center when I remodeled my home office a few years back.

I have had many M-17s , I now have 2, 617's , a 6 & 10 shot as well as a 63 8shot
S&W has been the only SA/DA revolvers ive ever owned in 40+ years and see no reason to switch. they have allways met my needs !

I bought a 617 6" when S&W first came out with them so mine a 6 shot. It's a good shooter but does it's best with CCI Small Game Bullet for some reason. A great gun that will never be sold.

BTW imashooter2, nice grips!

Shot a friends 4" and his 6" and had to buy my own but being anal I had to search for a pre-lock to match all my other stainless Smiths. Definitely a keeper for life and something to hand down to a son and grandson.

I have an original Smith 17 which is the early version. It is a great shooter and has one of the nicest triggers I have ever felt.

Bought my son one for his birthday. Wish I had bought it for me! Would LOVE to get my hands on a K-22.

I had a 6" with the 10-shot aluminum cylinder and it turned out to be a big disappointment. The previous owner had not maintained it well and the chambers were scarred up. I talked to Smith & Wesson and they said basically a new steel cylinder was the only option. I didn't like it enough to put another $250-300 into it to get it working properly, so I sold it to a collector friend that had no interest in shooting it. I would love to find a 4" 6 shot, but they are super scarce around here.

My 10 shot 4 incher had to go back to Smith because it spit lead horribly bad, enough to accumulate on the top strap and yoke and gum up double action after 50 shots. I got it back and it still spits after their forcing cone "repair". I've tried all sorts of ammo, and found that it likes the Winchester Super X bulk the best. If it wasn't such a sweet shooter it would have been gone long ago, but it's just way too much fun so I live with it.
