View Full Version : With the crazy 5.56 prices, has anyone had any luck with boolits in Colt M4's?

I'm starting to get my reloading set up for 5.56 I usually load 454 Casull and 45 ACP, but with the high prices of 5.56 and more importantly the inability to obtain it, I want to cast boolits. With the Colt twist heavier boolits are the best way, but I am wondering about the gas tube, yet I assume hard lead and high pressure will probably blow the ports clean.

If anybody has any experience or advice, I would be greatly appreciative.

Shoot away. Cast have been used in many gas guns, from the M1 and M14, to the AR. The high pressure will keep the gas system clean. Ignore the naysayers and discover the truth for yourself. If someone says something can't be done, ask why. If you get "Just because" or "I read it once" for responses, do your own research.

See if you can still get one of these from Mihec.

I have one and it seems to load, and work great in two of the AR's I have tried it in. I had to use the Hornady gas checks, but those are only 22-24$ for a thousand. I have been shooting 300 blackout with boolits with great success using reformed lake city brass. No problem shooting cast in an AR as long as you use a gas check above supersonic velocity. If you have the old colt 1/12 twist barrel it will do real well with cast. From what I remember you can get up to 2600fps or so before the bullet will come apart in flight because of the rate of twist. If you have a 1/9, or 1/7 you need to slow it down quite a bit.

I have a 6920, and a 6940. Both have the 1/7. So finding the longer heavier bullets is best, but so far finding jacketed is near impossible. I would like to find a way to shoot cast for plinking, and save my Lake City for the good shooting, so to speak.

Ever thought of making your own jacketed bullets for it?

Lots of threads on this site about loading 223 with cast, with loading data.

Yep use the 55gr GC Lyman mold in my AR's! Shoot for about $.10 a round!

I have the NOE 221 clone but haven't tested as since we built 300 BO uppers my son with the 5.56 upper hasn't taken it out to shoot...

That GB is closed.
Per 45 2.1 on page 3.
Or am I reading it wrong?

Actually, I believe your link leads the the 2nd GB, but there is now a 3rd GB. It is in the active GB section.

Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

If I can find a source of 22 brass, I might consider this. But right now, I just don't have access to much of that, then again, I guess I could shoot up a few bricks. Maybe I could find a way to sell some of these to get over the "sticker " shock. It sure is a bad a** system though.
