View Full Version : Lube for .45 ACP?

I've been using Rooster Red hard lube, but am wondering if a different lube would either reduce leading or improve accuracy (or, better yet, both)? The lube will be used in my Star which does have a heating plate. I would prefer not to use a soft, sticky lube.

Many thanks,
Richard

yes...

I need to learn to be more precise here.

;-)

What would be a better lube?

Thanks,
Richard

White label lubes have a strong following. See sticky : http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?14569-White-Label-Lubes

I've been using Ben's Red since I made a batch. My Springfield .45 likes it, and cleaning is usually a 2-3 patch job.

No plans on changing lube for it.

White Label Carnuba Red has never leaded any barrel I own....

I just use Magma Lube.
Its a hard lube that doesn't get stick when outside temps hit 90++

Your problem with leading may not be the lube. Most times in 1911 leading is from wrong size. Slug then size. I bet that will cure it. Then you won't have to change lubes :o

I love BAC lube in the 45ACP.

all good answers above.
your leading is most likley from something other than the lube.
a 452 boolit from the case into and out of the barell would most likely fix the leading issue.
the only way a lube can help a leading issue is to make it softer.

This is only 1 senairo , 357 mag SS pistol with a 2x7 scope used for testing , everything the same ,lot # of brass trimmed, lot# of powder, lot# of primers , and bullets cast at the same time with the same lot# of gas checks the ony difference was BULLET LUBE , ammo loaded at the same time , 12.0 grs of WW820 , RCBS 200gr FNGC bullet, accuracy was the same at 100 yards 2 1/4 inches for 25 shots, but the bullets lubed with RR Zambene red had a 67 fps avg higher velocity than the bullets lubed with LBT commercial . so the LBT lubed bullet shot a little lower at 100 yards and i had to click up my sight adj to compensate.
So IMO the LBT lube did a better job of reducing friction in the bore and created less pressure , therefor lower velocity, sort of like what happens when you moly coat J bullets.

Its been my experience that faster bullets hit lower as they make it out of the barrel earlier in the recoil cycle.

Tumble lube is all I do on my .45

.45 ACP is my most used caliber on the range (mostly in my 625's) and I run Lars White Label Carnauba Red. It works as well as anything I have tried (over 100,000 rounds with the .45 ACP) and is extremely inexpensive. My friends who have tried it all agree with my assessment.

Another vote for White Label Carnauba Red. I don't have lots of experience with these things, but if it can make ME look good at casting, it'll likely work for you.

I use it in a Star with a Lyman heater. Goes on great, doesn't come off when the loading room is hot.

In summer it is very hot here in Africa, so I use White Label Commercial 160 in my Star, in winter time I use Carnauba red, both work fine, no leading at all in my 1911's, and it is very affordable as well!

If you don't want sticky lube than I would suggest either Magma or the CR commercial(your leading is another issue). I'm guessing you are bulk storing lubed bullets and don't want them sticking together. The regular CR and other softer lubes will get messy in bulk storage unless bullets are boxed neatly in rows. If you are going right from the Star into containers that's what I would recommend.
