I have a dumb question probably- can you shoot a projectile out of a signal cannon or is it just for powder?

I wouldn't, at least with a genuine antique -- they were originally built only to make noise or test powder, not to take the much higher pressure you'd get behind a ball, and that was before centuries of corrosion. Some modern miniature cannon sold as "signal cannons" are in fact just model cannon that can handle a ball; if the cannon is modern, I'd check with the manufacturer before trying a ball in it.

Hmm. Too small for golf balls, and that's a pretty thin barrel for lead ball. I note the bore is apparently about 4" shorter than the barrel -- either it's still loaded () or it's not bored deep enough to fire with the scale touch hole. Looks like there may be some fluffery in the listing; I certainly wouldn't bid on it with intent to fire it. It looks like it was built as a display model, not an actual signal cannon.

Golf balls are smaller than 1-3/4 inches so they should be a good projectile to shoot with a newspaper wad and "Paper patch or cloth patch"and a light charge of BP...Lead Im not sure about or if the cannon was proofed for that use.

Agreed. A golf ball over a light charge is about all I'd shoot out of something called a signal cannon.
A golf ball is about 1 5/8" diameter.

if you don't mind some wandering thru the scrap yard and have a friend that is a VERY EXCELLENT WELDER making on like this is not very hard. my usual load is a pop or beer can full of concrete with about 1-2 oz of blackpowder ususlly good for around 200-300 yards, most generally use plastic grocery bags as wadding.
i was offered $3000 for it . I just laughed at em.

let me know what you think
