I'm just getting back to reloading. Got the dies, press, etc. and some new 45-70 brass from Starline. Is there any prep necessary before loading them up?
Seems a silly question, but I have to ask.

Even though it's new I would still run it all through station 1. You won't be decapping, but you'll still be sizing. Make sure you use case lube!

If loading black powder anneal them otherwise run them!

I do prep work on cases, and some end up as cartridge conversions or wildcats!

Take care

I always size new brass, just to make it uniform. It gets pretty beat up in shipping, since it's bulk packed.

I recently processed 500 new .444 Marlin cases, and when I got near the end of them, one wouldn't go all the way into the sizing die, like something was stuck inside of it. When I checked it, there wasn't a flash hole, so the decapping pin couldn't go any further. It now sits on the shelf above my loading bench as a reminder to check all brass prior to loading, new or otherwise.

Hope this helps.

I agree with others, size that new brass. And lube lightly.

Good Luck

I anneal new brass then size it. I anneal after about 5 reloads or so also.

I run them though my annealing machine also.

I've seen some redrawn cases with necks off center. As a result I resize and trim every new case.
