On a .416 bullet is .440 of bore ride too much?

On my 423 350gn bullet I have .340 and it has proven a very accurate bullet but I drew it up so it could be loaded to the same OAL as the Woodleigh so the crimp groove/front of drive band and nose shape dectated the length of the bore riding section. Magazine length may play a part in what you are able to load unless this is a single shot proposition. Is it a mould you are getting or already cast bullets?
This is what the mould drops that I had made for my 404 jeffery.

I had the bullet made from mountian molds for my 416 Rigby, but I was worried about 32% of my bullet being bore ride, I figured fortune favors the bold

It is based off of this boolit, I had to lengthen the bore ride and blunt the nose a touch.

Have you kept the same OAL and just re worked the ogive back from .490 to .420 to lengthen the bore ride from .370 to .440??

Only thing I did was change was the bore ride, OAL stayed close to the same as it is close to box mag max length. I had to make the meplat .030 larger so it did shorten by .020 but the length in the case stayed the same.

i read the other thread where tom drew up the pics too.
the bigger meplat will be nice.
if your throat/leade needs the extra there to fill it you'll be good too.
you changed it enough to make it almost a full bore ride type boolit.
it should be accurate enough,i don't know how much velocity you'll be able to get from it.
1900 should be easy enough and taking out the little extra unsupported nose should be helpfull.

It is a CZ 550 and a Rigby, there is enough horse power to drive 450 gr jacketed pills to about 2200 fps and that is what I am looking for here. I guess it will resemble a really really big 311440.

Agree with runfiverun but the only way to really know is to shoot it.........

tom's been telling everybody that, but i'd bet 2-3 weeks is more like it.
start at the 1900 area and push it,you have the twist rate on your side,so i'll go out on a limb and say you'll get right in there.
just seat it out as far as possible.
be prepared to play with the alloy a little to get the correct nose engraving, use as slow a powder as you can,and don't be afraid to use a filler.

Would you think I could use the surplus 50 BMG powder? I was gonna try that OR try to use H-1000 to make it work. Planned alloy was 50/50 Pure and Lyno, should get me close to WW alloy I think.

I've never waited more than a month even when he was quoting eight weeks. Mountain makes good stuff--it will be worth the wait.

the 50-50 you show is the same as terracorp magnum alloy [2/6/92] same as the commercial guy's use.
i add 2% more tin when i use this alloy and make 4/6/90 this will pour a bigger boolit than ww alloy.
i gain about .001 in diameter with it over ww and some tin.
i have pushed it to over 2700 fps in my 22 cal rifles.
it penetrates like crazy on animals but doesn't offer a whole lot of upset.
it's a little softer than water dropped ww's by about 3-4 bhn points.

I will go with your suggestion, I really am after penetration, I think a .416 hole will allow enough blood/air exchange for a quick kill. With a .376 (approx) SD I cant wait to see what this boolit will penetrate!

16"s of pine would be a good trial, make sure there is some dirt behind it.
you can cut that 4/6 in half with ww's and almost not notice a difference in the way i casts or sizes.
unless you waterdrop it.
then woohee it gets hard.
but that would be one easy way to get the nose size tweaked just a titch.

16 inches? Wow... I am gonna go get me a tree and cut a 20 inch length to shoot should stop it I reckon. I have been reading up on long range BP shooting and big bore shooting yada yada yada to hopefully help ke make this rifle a nice long range elk gun.
