I just bought a used mold on Ebay. (havn't got it yet) It is a Lyman, marked 457406. I looked it up in some old Lyman reloading books I have and they say it weighs either 450, 475 or 500 grains, depending on the year of the Lyman manual. It is a round nose gas check design with 4 lube grooves. The pictures in the Lyman books all show it as a 3 lube groove design. Anyone have one with 4 grooves? What does it weigh? Thanks in advance, Stubert

Stubert, I looked it up in my manuals. The Lyman 45th edition and the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook (1970) show it as being four lube grooves and a weight of 475 grains. Hope this helps some...Ray

Stubert:

My late 1960's #457406 has four grease grooves, plus the space ahead of the gas-check on the long-ish GC shank, which would serve as a fifth; or, you could consider the top groove a crimping groove, and you'd be back to four. I don't have any samples cast up to weigh - and I'm not gonna if this 100+F weather keeps up! - but this bullet was intended to be a GC version of the old Government 500-gr. #457125, and that one has suffered "grain creep" over the years and is now up to 520 grs. +/-.
