Did H&G mark the L & R blocks in any way to make it easy to see if the blocks are properly mated or not? I know Lyman used to add a number to both L & R blocks that was only used to keep the mated halves together, but don't know about other companies.

No. Blocks were unmarked. But a top down photo is the second best assurance that blocks haven't been mismatched. The best assurance is a cast bullet from the blocks.

When converted to auto cast blocks a number or letter is stamped to keep the proper halves together
