I've cast some boolits using a Lyman 452460. They are for use in .45 ACP loads in the 800 - 830 fps range. Using Bullseye powder.

These boolits have two lube grooves. When sizing these with my RCBS LAM II I'm able to fill the lower lube groove fine, but when I also fill the upper lube groove often I'll get some lube over the front shoulder and onto the sides of the nose of the boolit.

Here's the question: For use with .45 ACP loads do I need to fill both lube grooves, or will filling just the lower one be sufficient? All information will be appreciated. Thanks!

Filling the lower groove only should give you plenty of lube. The H&G #68, which is loved by many, has a single groove. Many here shoot the 452460 and only fill the bottom groove.

I have that mold also. Lubing the lower groove gives adequate lubrication. It possible, the cause of lube coming out over the shoulder, is the bullet depth stop adjustment is wrong, allowing the bullet to go too deep into the sizer die?

I've spent quite a bit of time working on the depth adjustment and still had some trouble with lube getting past the shoulder. I noted that when I sized the boolits that the two lower driving bands were obviously sized as they got very shiney, but the top diving band doesn't seem to get touched by the sizing die. I'm using a Lyman .452 sizing die. I'm wondering if the top driving band is a tiny bit smaller in diameter and that's why the lube is getting past the shoulder of the top band. If the top driving band is smaller is that normal, or have I bought a bad mould? I purchased the mould used on evilbay. Any thoughts on this?

Adjust the depth the boolit goes into the sizer die. Over pressurizing the lube can also cause the lube to go past the boolit.....dale

The forward band on the 452460 if you measure it I think you will find it is a bore rider. This is a very accurate bullet, from a machine rest, cast from lino I have shot 5 shot 50 yard (yup 50 yards) groups around 1". Using 4.0 of bullseye.

you only gotta lube 4-5" of barell.
just fill the bottom one.
it most likely is more accurate this way anyhow.
at least all the testing i done with this mold [i used to have],and others with multiple grooves, have always indicated to me it was.

I never fill other than the bottom groove on that boolit. It's a good one. The bottom groove only is plenty of lube. In fact, both grooves filled would likely be too much. Mike

Willbird,

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by the front driving band of the 452460 being a "bore rider". I used my calipers and it seemed that the front or top driving band measured slightly smaller than the bottom or rear two bands. Wasn't sure if this was normal with that mould or if mine has a problem. Could you explain what you meant about the "bore rider"? Is it normal for the front or top band to be smaller in diameter in the 452460? All information will be appreciated. By the way...mine is an older single cavity 452460. Thanks!

what did it measure?
449ish.
your "bore" is gonna be right close to that, the groove diameter will be more like 452.

If the front band is smaller than .452", you may get some lube over the front shoulder. My 452460 measures .453" at the top band & .455" at the bottom as it drops from the mould. Do you have a heater on your sizer? Might want to turn it off or lower the temperature. I size with a Lyman 450 & soft 50/50 lube. Make as cast boolit diameter larger by adding Linotype.
