I plan to shoot mostly lighter boolits. A 405 grainer would be heavy.

Want to plan around the Ranch Dog 460-350.

It is 0.905"

If I did the calculations correctly I calculate 1:34 twist

Plan on somewhere around a max of 1500-1800 fps.

Need a good shooter quality barrel to build a "light to medium weight "Sporter" on Rem RB action.

Not to a lotta folks taste, but it is what I want.

1 in 20 is the standard twist for 45-70 barrels. I have also seen 1 in 18 twist barrels. A 1 in 34 twist barrel would limit your gun to short boolits ran at high speed.

Some .45-90 Winchester rifles which were called "Express" had slower twist barrels of 1 in 32 due to the fact that they were only shooting Short 300 gr boolits and they were doing it at 2000 fps ish. Accuracy was mediocre.

Just use a 1 in 20 twist barrel and you'll be fine and your gun will handle a wider variety of Boolits if you decide later that you want to use them.

My Uberti Hiwall has a 1 in 20" twist, as does a most of factory rifles of different makes. I shoot the Lyman 457125 boolit, and it
shoots fine.
There are a lot of long range target shooters that prefer a 1 in 18" twist to use the heavier boolits for waaaayyyyyyy out there.
+1 on what Randy quoted you, 1 in 20" would be fine for the short boolits/bullets.

Thanx,

1:20 would be better anyway.

Glad to see it is the "normal" twist.

Thanx to all for the inf.

The old trap door rifles have a 1 in 22" twist and shoot a 500 grain bullet, but then the barrel is 35" long. Most modern rifle are ether 1 in 20" or 1 in 18" which works better for the shorter barrel.

I shoot a Ped. 45-70 Quigley, have a 525 grn. mold and have tried some bullets made of straight wheel wghts. With 25 grn of IMR 4759. It key holds at 50yrds, Can anyone tell me why. The rifle has a 1in18 twist.:coffee:

Don't know much about the 4759 powder. If your velocity is not high enough then the bullet is not spinning fast enough to stabilize. With a 1 in 18 twist a lighter bullet will stabilize at lower velocity. Also you might slug your bore and see if you are using the correct bullet diameter.

I have got keyholes in 45/70 when the bullet was leading badly
