I just got a chance to try out my new RCBS 30-180FN mould. Now, I've cast in a lot of moulds, but I must say, this has been one of the easiest to get going. I just degreased with the usual parts cleaner, adjusted the sprue plate, mounted it in the Cabine Tree handles, smoked it with a butane lighter, preheated with my hot plate and then torch...and bang! First two bullets cast leapt from the mould, perfectly filled out. Admittedly, they were a little frosty as the mould got a bit hot, but still. That was amazing. I find it a little long for .308 Winchester, but I think the Marlin .30/30 will love it. I have an 03 Springfield that could use a good cast bullet load, too.

Most of my casting has been done with custom moulds, so I've not really tried one from RCBS in many years. Are they all this good?

The hot plate is the key to success. I do like rcbs molds though.

I have two RCBS moulds, I like them both. I have some problems with the .38 cal. mould but I think I pour to fast into the mould. I am going to slow down next session and see if it helps. I love the .44KT, it makes purdy bullets.

Best, Rick

Whoa! Now that's a big picture! Did I do something wrong?, suitable for framing and then some.

Here's another, just because I can. Hope it's normal size.

i don't have too many problems with any of my rcbs molds other than remembering how they like to be poured.
they are usually just pour, open, and shake.
i like to give them a quick burnishing with a lap after the first use.

they definatly do not need any smoke or anything like that.

Rick:

I am also a big fan of the RCBS 44-250-KT mold ! Bullets drop with great ease and they are good "shooters" in .44 Special !

seagiant,
I notice you are using lyman lead ingots with that pro-melt and rcbs mould, is that the secret?:kidding:

Very nice job. RCBS makes great molds, you did a good job with it.

As stated, smoking is only good for making the boolits smaller, not necessary.

Hi 375,
Yea you are right,I wish they said RCBS but when you go to the Flea Market you take what you can find! As far as the Pro-Melt goes I almost bought a 40# Magma Pot but figured I would be wasting money so called the nice lady at RCBS looking for a "second" or rebuilt Pro-Melt and she actually had a second for $200! I think the Pro-Melt is the best money I've ever spent and have never looked back!

Love all my RCBS molds. I'd love even more of them if they were in a four cavity version, at least the ones designed for pistol bullets. I can live with a one or two cavity in a rifle mold but...

So far, yes. If you see an old OHaus mold, that is what became RCBS. My only complaint on RCBS is I'd like to see more selection and more cavity options.

Have a few RCBS myself they cast great boolits and 2c are good, but a 3c would really fit the bill for me.
