:-D If it seems that I'm happy, I am. I've been wanting one of these handles for a very long time. I just got these and after cleaning them up a bit to get the small amount of surface rust off and the dust of fifty plus years, a bit of oil here and there and I was in business.
I have always liked the steel handles more than the aluminum ones, but these transitional handles are very few and far between.
I now have what I consider the very best (as in most desirable) handles ever made by Lyman.
I wonder how many of these were ever made? It cannot be all that many as they aren't seen very often.
As a user rather than collector, I'm getting great pleasure using them[smilie=w:

They are sweet, aren't they.

I have the same and also one in small. They are hard to find, and not cheap when you do usually. I traded a 348 Winchester 310 (large size) for them.

Is it a medical device? It must have something to do with Boolits, but I am ignorant. What is it for?
Thanks!

Congratulations! As I have posted here before, I saw the steel handled tools (which I believe were made in the transitional type for only one year) and knew I just "had" to have them! :coffee: I found a set at a gun show in Richmond, VA priced the same as a used alloy set and snapped them up, only to finally realize when I got them home that they were the "S" handles for small cases like pistol rounds. A year or so later I found the "L" size in Roanoke, VA at another show, and these two form the core of my 310 tool "working set." I was also fortunate enough along the way to pick up dedicated handle sets for three of my favorite calibers to load for, 32 S&W (short and long) 32-40, and 45-70. Life is good! :D

Yes, they're beautiful. I looked far and wide for a set for my .22 Hornet and KYwoodwrkr was kind enough to find me a set. A set marked .22 Hornet with the plum finish. Works great.

There are several variations of the steel handles and the ones you have with the plum colored finish are my favorites. I think they changed material at some time and went to a material that didn't take that finish.

You have agem./beagle

Anyone interested in these should go to Castpics, then to references, then to the Lyman 310 tool, the references and how to reload with 310 tool, and then to the 310 shop. Ole boy in Denton, TX. Rick Morrill. Really a fine guy. Knows it all. Has everything you want, or can make it. Can't say enough good stuff about him.

Rick is the 310 man. And his custom prices are little more than the commercial ones. Way more selection too. I really like 310s, but have yet to get a set of steel handles. Really a quality tool I think. Thanks for the pictures.

Mention of that article made me think of something from that issue. I apologize for the off topic post, but there was an article by Ken Mollohan(Molly) in that issue and the issue before(Nov-Dec 2012). I thought Molly passed away last year. I have seen no acknowledgement in the Fouling Shot.

I just found the thread that included notification of his death.

He was a fairly prolific writer and they must have had a backlog of articles submitted by him.

John, Look at this, especially post #20: http://www.castbulletassoc.org/forum/view_topic.php?id=8704&forum_id=29 Perhaps I'm mistaken, but wasn't there a brief mention of Ken's passing in TFS #220?

Thanks for pointing me to that. I exchanged emails with Molly a few years ago concerning making NRA 50/50 lube from Alox 350 and microcrystalline wax. He sent me detailed instructions and I think he posted the same either here or on the CBA forum. He was very unselfish with his extensive knowledge.

Back on topic, I would be curious to know just how many of the transitional ("interchangeable" steel) handles are out there and still in use. From a manufacturing and absolute utility standpoint, the aluminum handles are (sacrilege alert!!) probably just as good as the steel, but from an aesthetic standpoint and that indefinable "feel" during use, the steel comes out way ahead. The old nickel plated #3 and #10 handles and the plum colored post-war steel handles dedicated to a single family of cartridges are just as nice in use, and as I said, I wouldn't be without my (nickel) 32 S&W and (plum) 32-40 and 45-70 sets. Somewhere in the flotsam and jetsam I have a like-new 22 HP set, and slightly used 32 auto and 222 Rem sets, all plum and an old beat up 30-06 set in nickel. I probably should put them in the swaps and trades section if I can dig them out. I have several sets of aluminum handles, of course, but for the life of me I can't remember the last time I used a set of them.

I am looking for my first set and the "plum" color would be great, I have a single action relover from my Father... a Great Western 44 mag with the same plum color hardening.

That plum color isn't the result of hardening. It's the what happens with an older style of blueing after four or five decades go by.
