I have had a couple of contenders for about 15-17 years now, but have never really shot one as a rifle until this past year. My daughter needed a smaller stocked rifle to shoot and as I had a rynite butt stock and forearm laying around for years, I purchased a 23" barrel in 7-30 waters for it and gave it a try. My daughter really likes it and it fits her well. Small enough and short enough for her to handle comfortably, with light recoil and very good accuracy.

What I have found out is- I enjoy it as a rifle too! Except for the stock! At 6'5" and lets just say a bit too much weight, this tiny little stock is quite uncomfortable to shoot. I would like to build my own contender rifle that fits me. I have been looking for a larger stock, but have come up with nil. Pretty much all of the stocks I have found are either basic copies of the regular stocks or they are thumbhole. If I am going to spend the money for a stock, I would like to have it really be what I want.

Does anyone know of any custom stock makers out there that do custom T/C stocks? What I would like is an adaptation of a stock like this one- http://www.rifle-stocks.com/benchmark.htm

I know the design would have to be tweaked to fit a contender, but it should be possible right? The gun would mainly be used for 100-200 yd plinking and target shooting. Anyone know of a stock maker who would do this kind of work? Thanks, Billy

You may want to check over on Speciality Pistols website. There are a couple custom stock makers there. At times there are also some on the for sale section.

This is a http://www.bullberry.com/ stock I have mounted with a 6.8 SPC barrel. I got it semi-finished and did the tru-oil finish myself.

Thanks Guys. That's a nice looking stock Plater. I have already contacted Bullberry, and they were the only one I have contacted who said that they could do what I wanted. High plains gunstock just said no, just like anyone else I contacted. Bullberry replied in an e-mail on Thursday that I should call and we could work out the details, but when I tried to call on Friday, there was no answer. I will be trying again on Monday.

Well poo....I thought he might want the work....oh well been wrong before.

Personally putting a thumbhole on my contender carbine is proven to be one of my better moves....I really like my purple laminate thumbhole and it is not even truly finished yet. I still need to let it sit awhile and buff her down for her final coat....but she shoots/handles/carries well with that funky looking stock on her. It really has me thinking about replacing some of that pallet lumber on my H&R's in fact.

This who I have building me a custom carbine stock for my contender chambered in 7mmTCU with a 21" bull barrel (.810). He has a long lead time atm due to volume. Hope this helps.

If you are inclined..........
You can fab and install a hardwood spacer on the butt end of a rynite stock. Add a better recoil pad and you will have a relatively light weight, comfortable stock. I did.

Nothing against a beautiful custom hardwood / laminated stock, but they are heavy, and for hiking / hunting, the extra weight is the last thing I want my contender carbine to sport.

Boyds are now making thumbhole stocks for Contenders. I have had a variety over the years but my last build I used an Encore Pro Hunter thumbhole stock. You need to do a little shimming but the Contender drops right in and it was the cheapest route to go for a full size thumbhole

Bullberry does great work, not inexpensive. I have a 7x30 Waters 22" Bullberry barrel on my Contender carbine. (.22 hornet originally) I built a new forend from a Bullberry blank with his hanger system. It is a joy to carry, very accurate (sub moa) with 120/130gr. Jword spitzers and death to every deer it ever shot at.
