Good morning
Decided to not go out and enjoy the cold one diget temperatures today. Fill out my monthly reports and box up more stuff for storage.
But in the process I was thinking how hefty that 1873 heavy barrel rifle is. So I thought why not weigh it compared to another 44-40.

So pictured are the 1873 2nd model heavy barrel... 10 lbs . And a 1892 44-40 carbine #41xx07 from 1907 that weighs in at 5 pounds 2 ounces. Had my wife pick up both and give her evaluation... No way did she want that chunky 1873 anywhere near.
I have shot both with about the same 215 grain boolit load. The light carbine lets you know you just launched a 215 grainer but nothing serious. The heavy 1873 goes bang and recoil is perceived with same boolit but as mild as you can imagine. Be a great hot day T-shirt rifle.
No real ground shaking info here.. just an overactive mind that wants to find better things to do than pack away shooting equipment.

It sure must be hard to pack up those old classics for another stint down south. A 10 pound '73! That is one heavy barrel.

Imagine what that will be with a full tube of 215 grainers.. should be near 12 pounds !
Yea it is the one part of headed south I do not relish... go to the local war museum with lots of rare old timers for the exibits. The rest get oiled and wrapped in wax paper to be placed in a cool, dark room with a humidifier. But hey I cannot complain. God has given us a great privalege in Peru. Plus I still have a 44-40 1892, Colt New Service and other neet finds down there waiting to go desert walking. There just is not enough time up here to really do much... would have enjoyed going pig hunting with the 50-95 filled with 3F.
