For my grandsons and my fun, I've tried to do some long shots with the 22's. It's fun! We're thinking of a tang peep on the rifle. Oh maybe that won't work with a bolt. Maybe a ladder sight. Anyway we were dropping them in from 250 yards by guessing height.

my son and i shoot prairie dogs all the time out west here out to 300 yards or so with a .22. our guns arent special we just learned kentucky windage. you can hear it hit when it hits them verses the dirt. it usually kills them also. they make easy meals for preadators that day. we have had eagles follow us around. the bullet goes through them so no lead to eat. the only thing to do when you do this is buy the best .22 amunition you can. some of it is inconsistant **** today. love duluth, we go their every summer for one day, as we been to lake winnie 5 years in a row.

Owen, a good repeatable tang sight really is nice for this. Check out some of the soule sights if you can swing the price my favorite is the Kelley with the adjustable eye disc

Good stuff. would have to have a scope for that. I have done it with my Sako, my 22 mag savage and 17 hm2. With iron sights you are the man. I ranged and dialed. Iron sights is another animal.

Shot a mini Creedmore one time, 1,000 ft. Target was a 22" square with an 11" gong in the center. My spotter and I shot as a Team. I found out that we needed 14 minutes of windage that day with my first two shots, (no sighters come to the shoot with your drop figures worked out), my partner put all 10 of his shots on that 11" gong and had room to spare. I used a C. Sharps Hi-Wall 22 with Hoke tang and my friend had a Dave Crossno 22 l.r. liner in a 45-70 Ballard with MVA tang sight.

I have a Mossberg 44b with peeps that make 200 yd .22lr shots doable. Have to crank up nearly to the top of the peep to hit that far out. It is alot of fun. Clay pigeons like to taunt me, but every once in a while I'll sneak in a "lucky" shot. They get too smug and end up getting busted eventually.

Several years ago I did some long range shooting with my Ruger 10/22. I was shooting balloons filled with water at 450 yards(approximately using my range finder) and was able to bust them using about an 8 foot hold over with a 2 foot windage to the left. My rifle has a fixed 4 power scope sighted in for 100 yards.

With a 100 yard zero come up 14-15 min of angle for a 200 yard zero.

200 yards with an enfield 22 trainer. We had to watch for the bullet splatter under the metal hanger. Sure is a hoot.

I like hanging metal targets - no clang no hit - you need to first have an accurate gun well sighted in before moving out - my eyes are so bad I have to have scopes on anything long distance - Mildot's help as does a level - It helps to have the area around it either water or dust so you can catch the misses. Dry or wet lake bed (not too deep) are about ideal.

I have a .22 bolt rifle with a scope on it. It carries the scope because I expect to have to pick off gophers at 60 yards or a bit further. My 10/22 carries only irons, with a peep on the receiver.
I don't use either of these for long range stuff, because they are 'working guns'.

But, if I did want to play long range games with a .22 rifle, I would seriously consider one like this thirteen pounder ...

That looks real nice. Now if it only shoots as good as it looks.

I'm not well-educated on .22 rifles, so I'll ask you.
Are Lothar Walther barrels anything special?

Yes! Lothar Walther barrels have been known to shoot. But 22's can and do show they have preferences for certain brands and lots, even velocity +/- 10 fps average.

I put a barrel turner on my friends Anschutz and as long as he shoots ammo between 1035-1055 fps it shoots great. Above or below that velocity it will not shoot unless we retune it.

My goto rimfire bbl is Lilja. Got 2 in .22 and one in 17hm2. Match chambers in the .22. They are on my Sakos. Love them. Many long range guys use Walther. I just restocked my brothers deer rifle that wears a Walther. Very nice. My brothers is a 1/2 minute gun.

My son and I spent alot of time with a kimber 22 goct and win 52 shooting 200 yds with standard velocity ammunition at 200 yds. Its almost identical to shooting a 308 service rifle at 1000yds. How I practiced for long range matches. We shot on paper targets so results were there. What a ball we had. It was really fun and cheap to do. The other plus is a rimfire barrel cared for has almost unlimited life.

My wife and I get a kick out of shooting our gong rifles. I have a 24" or so disk blade from an old farm disk hung at 200 yards, and we shoot offhand at it. My rifle is a Remington 513T, and hers is a 510 Targetmaster to which I added a receiver aperture sight and a Lyman globe front. We shoot five-shot strings. Four out of five hits usually wins, but not always. Of course, the blade has a hole in the center, and all sorts of preposterous claims are made regarding that.

My CZ .22 Lux has a factory open rear sight graduated to '200', meters I guess. Looks a lot like a small Mauser type rear sight. Never took it serious, guess I should.

I shoot Bpcr silhouettes and built a .22 to be a match to my match rifle. Winchester winder musket action, 28" #3 green mtn bbl, tang and globe sight. We like to get out in the evenings after the match is over and shoot .22s at the regulation silhouette targets. Chickens offhand everything else off sticks. In the evenings the wind usually is quieter as the sun is going down and we do real good work out to the Turkeys in these conditions. Rams are almost impossible as I haven't been able to spot misses. I think a .22 is pretty well spent at 500m. Turkeys at 385m aren't exactly gimmes but they can be hit regularly. Good practice and a whole lot of fun.

When I was much younger, and 22 ammo was much cheaper.... I remember shooting prairie dogs at my Grandfathers farm in Champion NE with my Remington 572. I could do pretty well up to 75 yds with those open sights. I also tried some 300 yds plus. I have no idea where those bullets went, I assume they came down eventually.... I remember hearing what I thought was prairie dog laughter.

I was shooting with a friend last fall using his heavy barreled Winchester 52 with an 8x Unertl scope and some Lapua ammo. 50 yds was on ragged hole, 100 yds was a cloverleaf. 300 yds wasn't too much of an issue keeping them in a grapefruit. That rifle is just plain cheating!

We only have a 200 yrd range, and love shooting at that range. If you focus you can generally see the arch of the round traveling. Fun

Useful, but something like that going to 500 yards would prove a lot more interesting.

Well, I guess we all have silly stories like this.... once several years ago there were three guys at the range. They were shooting at a clay pigeon hung on a nail in an old sheet of plywood at 300 yards. They were shooting some mighty fancy rifles, I dunno what caliber. I watched them through my spotting scope and they couldn't hit squat. They were punching holes in the old plywood all around the target. They stopped and I could hear all their excuses, wind, temp, blah, blah blah. My wife had been shooting a Remington 597 earlier and we were just fixin' to leave when I took one single shot with a CCI stinger. I gave a little Kentucky windage and held over a random amount.......that sucker busted in a million pieces. Luck being mine that day, I managed to keep my cool, bent over and picked up the brass and tossed it on the bench nearest the group. Never said a word, just smiled and me and the wife left for the sunday buffet.

I returned the following weekend and spent two boxes trying to hit another. Nope! Never again.
