metplat is the point ... or more often and usually a flat point . let's say i have a 50 cal. mold with a 50% metplat , by saying that you would know that my mold has a .250 flat point

ogive is the radius on the side , it leads from the metplat to the bearing surface ( the part that actually engages the rifling , ie; the transistion ) , somewhere on the ogive and just before the bearing surface is where the projectile enters the rifling , this is also the true place where one would measure actual clearance of the projectile to the rifling ( example - when some one states i seat this boolit .040 from the lands )

in the picture below the meplat is .280, the flat across the nose of the projectile

the ogive is R.801

Thanks for this info, clears up things for me.
How dose the Olgive relate to the throat and feeding of the barrel, Should it Just touch or should there be clearance to prevent any setback, This would be for my 1911 and a glock 17 and soon for a Rossi 92 in 357

Thanks Steve

IMO, on semi auto's, the Ogive should be just IN FRONT of "kissing" the lands, no touching.

on bolt guns and lever guns, faint engraving is well liked.

treat the leverguns throat the same as your semi auto pistols...
get everything as close to touching as possible on the front end and mimicking the throats shape everywhere else.
on a bolt rifle there should be some engraving on the nose portion and a mimick of everywhere else that sticks out of the case.
touching here is good.

I think he went back to Linoleum ...

Carpetman stops by from time to read but has not posted for almost 2 years. Not sure if someone stole his carpet knife or double face tape.

I see the odd "Zinger" over on the AR site from a poster "Carpetman" likely it's him!?
