Quite some time ago, I bought a sporterized 1895 chilean mauser. The price was right so SWMBO didn't notice much of an impact on the household budget. My goal is to come up with something that looks like a 50's era everyman's hunting rig and am slowing accumulating parts on a budget. I picked up a Weaver K4 from carpetman and now have a set of leupold two piece mounts on the way as a birthday present to me from me. Hey, I am worth it and who should know better than me. The bolt is already bent, but I will need a set of seriously high Redfield style rings to get the scope to clear. Any suggestions?

7br,
If the super high rings don't put the scope high enough, then the only recourse is to shim under the base for more height. You may even have to alter the bolt handle. -JDL

..........Rather then messing around with really high rings, how about replacing the bolt handle? If you're wanting a 50's era everyman's sporter this would be the deal. I did the same deal on a 03 Springfield barreled action I got. I call it my 'Garage Sporter'.

I had all the parts to finish it except a bolt, stock and reciever sight. I got the bolt and stock from one friend and the sight from another. The bolt was off someone else's sporter done at some unknown time. The body had been polished and engine turned, and showed wear from use. The bolt handle had been cut off, reshaped and welded back on. A nice job, but obvious as to what was done.

The stock was a military 'scant grip' type on which they'd added a contrasting nosepiece.

While it is no dazzeling beauty, to me at least it has a kind of nifty look of what your possibly average guy in the 50's might carry into the woods. Some working guy bringing home a weekly $100 paycheck picks up a $19.95 Springfield and whittles himself out a sporter in the garage, with maybe $40 total investment.

I appreciate the beauty and work that goes into a really fine custom rifle as much as the next guy. They can be masterfull creations and more works of art then anything else. But also, these humble sporters to me also have an interesting aspect to them.

Buckshot (and anyone else interested):

That IS a very handsome "bubba" job!

Sportsman's Guide's new "Shooting" catalog offers both unissued "scant grip" Springfield '03 stocks and pre-bent-handled bolts, at attractive prices.

Here's mine. A little more into it than you're planning on yours, but it works for me, but was done over a period of time so as to not break the bank, doncha know.

That's a Leupold mould and ring. The bbl finish was crap so I cleaned it really good and gave it a coat of flat black exhaust manifold paint - actually looks purdy good. This was done after the pic was taken as well as a bedding job. To accomodate the scope the bolt handle was cut and new flat one welded on at an angle to accomodate the scope.

I also have a RI (from CMP) with HS bbl I put a Carbolite stock (I sure do like those stocks!) on and an old Lyman peep and front 17 globe. I got a set of target knobs from Brownells and replaced the rear elevation and windage screws with target knobs. No pic, but neat looking and fun to shoot rifle. Other than the two holes for the sight, it can be return to original any time I want.

About the old Lyman peeps. I have one I bought when I was a kid (a 57?) and a 17. The box is printed with the price of $8.75 or so and the front is like $3.sumthin. These are steel, not aluminium. The one I put on the RI I gave $40 for it in new condition - a bargain. Fun projects! sundog

.............Sundog, and P-N-K, thanx for the compliments but it is a for sure scavenger hunt put together :D. SUndog, I almost have that price in my Lyman 57. Shooting buddy Glen said he had a Williams 5D I could have. When I got to his house and he proceeded to dig through his drawer full of sights he came up with the Lyman. He said you can have the Williams, if you want but would you give $10 for the Lyman? It's steel. I said, uh sure. :-) .

And he WAS digging through a drawer full of reciever sights. He held up a Lyman 48 for a Win M70 and said, "Where did that come from?" He accumilates stuff.

I will have to admit to not having a passion for plastic stocks, but I admit they have their place. I have one on the 35 Rem small ring Mauser. I'd gotten a flier several years ago from some discount outfit that had a bunch of Ramline stocks for small and large ring Mausers for $39 each. I should have bought 4 or 5 of'em.

Anyway Sundog, a nice looking sporter.
