Folks, is there a better powder for a 23" rifle length barrel than W296? IMR 4227 is a bit slow in pistol lengths... What does it do in a rifle length barrel?

I prefer IMR powders (because I have a few cans...) but Accurate powders are on my shelf...

In the IMR line only 4227 seems appropriate. 4198 would be even slower than 296. Based on case capacity I might play with Lil'Gun. AA1680 might work.

What weight boolit, if'n I may be so bold? And what seating depth? That'll make a lot of difference.

I know you asked for IMR and/or Alliant, but I'd highly recommend you look at
Vihtavuori N-110 (no relation at all to H110/W296). It is far & away the winner
in 357. Big Time

Fine-grained extruded
Easy/consistent measure throws ~ 0.05gr (half a tenth) average
Fills the case (but forgiving w/ lesser charges)
Standard primers
95%+ of W296/H110 speeds
Exceptionally consistent velocities

V-N110 is the (not so) best-kept secret in the 357Mag game

Charge weights for 158gr bullet?

Use H110 data...seating depth will greatly influence pressure. Time to learn how to work up a load, IMHO.

I would follow Edd's advice about working up a load, but I would personally start with VhitN120 or Alliant MP300. After working with several similar case/bore/expansion ratio cartridges them powders almost always are the shining star of the lot for getting good accuracy with speed. AA1680 always fails to get you "there" . LilGun will likely get you "there" but it does some really really quirky things when you get to it's upper limits and it is a really great powder for lengthening the throat/leade. :(

Ordered some 300MP today. If you are standing at a gun show, looking at Alliant powders, you want the one that says "300-MP" on the bottle. There is "Power Pistol" which is not the same.
