We are casters and collectors of bullet molds. How many molds do you have? This may force some members to do some counting!:castmine:

not enough!!!!

I think I have 23 diffrent pistol and shotgun molds. I have been casting for those for years but I want to get into rifle in the near future. I think I will start with .375H&H and 45/70

Well I voted 11-25. I just started casting and got all my stuff from a estate sale in one lot. Got a bunch of molds i'll never use. but also a few I do use. Gathering more as money allows. Probably offer them in the swap and sell in the near future so I can trade or sell for the molds I need.

Funny you bring this up. Right now I'm at 89 molds. As I was looking for a certain mold the other day I was surprised to find that I had 19 molds for 38/357 alone, counting 6 duplicates. I ran across quite a few I haven't used in years. I killed the rest of the afternoon cataloging them in a notebook and referencing top punch numbers.

...counting 6 duplicates. I killed the rest of the afternoon cataloging them in a notebook and referencing top punch numbers. SP, your a candidate for eBAY! And didn't I initially say ..."This may force some members to do some counting."[smilie=1:

I learned in the very beginning, a spread sheet is needed with the mold number - caliber - nominal diameter and if used frequently, the diameter relative to the alloy.

I am very lucky to have 191 molds: single - doubles - 6 cavity - Ideal Reloading Tools and Ideal blocks that came with the handles attached.

My initial inventory was 76 molds. Then my best friend passed on. His brother, the executor, said one day ... 'John, I got a present for you'. Into a couple of large boxes, we put 115 molds of all types and calibers. Now, my objective in life, is to buy a rifle or two for the calibers I don't have. The 1st one that comes to mind, is a Ballard single shot for the Ohaus 46 Ballard mold - Sweet!

I'm a addict for sure, I have 10 just in the 311413. 1 dc (.313), 3 that cast .313 - .314 (one of those I made into a PB), 1 that casts .311 all standard 311413 marked. My others are, u - ex (.306), ex (.308), u (.310), Geo. Hensley (.312), B&M (.313). There are about 3 more to collect by different makers, maybe more :).

Buying moulds brings me as much buyers happiness as buying a gun. Thing is I can get two or three really great moulds for the price of a cheapie gun. Then too, a pile of moulds doesn't draw as much attention as a pile of guns.....in other people's eyes. I find that handy.

I have a small business making bullets in Canada and have about 200 molds, most of the LBT designs for .44, .45, .458, and .501 and .512", prolly about 30 molds for the 45/70, lots for the .45 Colt's and the Casull, prolly another 30 for the .44s, BPCR molds, just about anything! Lot's of .30 cals. including Eagan designs, etc.

My casting "career" began with two objectives:

1.: ....to supply the needs of two active Bullseye competitors (my wife and myself.... I ended -up having cast over 1/4 million .38 wadcutters, plus many thousands of .45 SWCs to boot)

and :

2:.....to maintain enough tooling to allow me an independent supply of ammunition for EVERY firearm we owned (apart from the rimfires of course).

I succeeded in these aims fairly early-on, but NOW, good grief! There must be at least a dozen .30-caliber moulds on hand, and multiples in most of the other calibers as well. Independent? I'd say so, except that sometimes I think this agglomeration owns ME, instead of the other way around....and yes, they do breed in the dark.

I am a shooter not a collector. Thus I have only 80 some moulds at this time. I have had many more in the past as I experiment and try different moulds. If one works I generally keep it but if one doesn't work and I've no real other application for it I don't hesitate to sell it or trade it. I have traded/sold a few off that I now regret doing so..........

If you know how many you have, you haven't enough. I have 25 (at least) 30 caliber molds, 14 38/9mm, 8 44 molds..., 17 45 molds, 3 38-55 molds, an at least one each in 258, .348, .316, .323. There may be a few more hiding out that I don't recall, in fact, as bad as my memory has become, I'd bet on it. But I only have one mold for which I don't own a gun. But I'm only signed up for 4 group buys. And I haven't bought a mold in months...weeks....days.[smilie=1:

I responded to the poll sometime back and don't remember how many I had at the time. I decided to do an up-to-date inventory the other day.Since I responded to the poll, I've acquired a few more and now have 104.

I would be interested if some would list the different makers of their molds. To start it off, I have listed my molds and their makers. It can get confusing if you have a bunch of molds.

My list:

LEE 36
Lyman/Ideal 15
MP 12
NOE 7
RCBS/Ohaus 11
SAECO 8
H&G 5
LBT 4
Mountain Molds 1
Applegate 1
NEI 1
Old West 1
? 2

Most(but not all) of the Lee's were GB's. Ditto, for the MP's.

Just started so I only have one, a 6 cavity Lee TL358-158... will do more. I think I enjoy reloading and casting more than the range time. Thanks to this site for all of the advice -- all has been good and kept me from screwing things up. First 650 I cast turned out like they came off a production line. I'd order more but like everything else.. the insanity will have to stop first...

4. Mihec HBWC .44 cal
5. Mihec 22 Nato

A bit of a tendency there.... :p

edit:
I think my next mold is going to be something other than a Mihec, since it's a very specialized design, called the Snakebite grease wagon. A .38spl bullet with an extra large lube groove for black powder shooting and a bit longer/heavier to reach .357mag length out of a 38spl case. That's going to be my main round for the two new guns I plan on acquiring this spring (1873 lever & revolver). Which will be mainly a BP platform.

I have 120+ and have used nearly all of them. I recently bought a Lyman 452488 that I have not used yet. It has been too cold to cast. I have a couple that are duplicates or that have never been used. I also have a number that are no longer used thanks to the pistol ban in the UK. However there are some moulds I no longer use that I would be loathe to part with because the have now developed sentimental value. Can that happen?
I am beginning to think I should thin down my numbers. I have recently discovered custom mould makers and I can see there will be more moulds I have to have.
You can never have too many.

I didn't count the half dozen jig molds or the decoy anchor molds includng one cast iron Herters mold that drops four strap type anchors. Then there's the decoy keel weights. I hate to think of all the linotype in a hundred or more decoy keels. Back in the early 70s a guy used to give me those 22lb bars of linotype. I still have an old plaster of paris mold for a decoy anchor I designed. Line winds on the anchor and it still fits over the head of the decoy but I didn't count any of the above.

A pleasent youg fellow brought me three just day before yesterday. An old Lyman with handles for the 38/40, I believe a Shiloh .533" hollow base, and a very nice 45/70 complete loading tool. The 45/70 tool just says--- 45 Gov. 500--- with no makers name but its a nice clean tool. I cast it and it looks much like the Lyman 457125.

I have 12 now and honestly could see tripling that number for just the weapons I reload for now. I almost couldn't believe some of the numbers I read on some of these post, but then got to thinking, I have only been doing this for 3 years and need 36 to cast the boolits I would like to cast, so yeah I could see owning a hundred or two. I don't think you can have to many moulds.

OK, I'll take a best guess on this at 60-75 as I don't feel like digging them out. My very first mold was a Lyman 12 slug my wife gave me for Christman about the second year we were married. Then my next was a 358429 DC. Back in the old days it was easy to pick up nice old Ideal and Lymans for $5 to $25 and sometimes a 4 cav with handles for that price. What has really killed my wallet is the group buys from this bunch. But I'm glad I got in on the ones I have. Currently have a Balisticast coming and down for one more Noe. That Noe has to be my last one.

I just started casting this year and I'm already up to 8 or 9 pistol molds and 1 rifle. This hobby is addicting like reloading. It is getting expensive for me because I find myself buying new guns just because I picked up a lot of brass in a specific caliber. I suppose I could sell of those pieces of brass to fund other things but I'm a hoarder and everyone around me shames me because they say I have 8 of everything. It was like this when I was buying cars randomly as well

More than I need but not as many as I want.
I am not a collector. I have molds for all my calipers. I've cast with all my molds but haven't test fired all the bullet designs yet. I do have doubles of a couple designs but plan to either hollow point a few or sell/trade a couple as well. Only have two molds that I have no gun for, both designs for .348 Win.

When I voted in this poll over a year ago I was at 102 molds. Now the count is over 130. It's easy for me to count cuz I keep a list by manufacturer on a excel spread sheet to keep me from buying duplicates. Just got done casting a batch of Belding & Mull 311169s & a batch of 360156 HPs from Miha's latest creation.

This is off topic but since this thread is where the anomaly occurred, I'm posting it here. I'm sure all of you are familiar with the emails notifying of a reply to a thread that you have subscribed to, either by posting to the thread or subscribing due to interest in the subject.

I got an email this afternoon notifying me that a new reply had been posted. I clicked on the link and that particular post was nowhere to be found. It is not a big deal since the content of the post is in the email.

This happens occasionally, not often, but leaves me wondering what happened. Could the poster have gone back and deleted his post? If so, why?

Not as many as I used to own. I don't own as many firearms as I used to own either. I got sick of mediocrity and decided to narrow down my playing field in an effort to become MORE proficient with what I have. Better to have one rifle and KNOW how to use it than have a hundred and not be able to run any of them well. That's just me though.

I purchased a half dozen more at an estate sale a few weeks back.

Its a.41 mag, 220 gr, have both a smith and ruger and bought new about 1976 neither gun has ever seen a factory round. I say its not just how many molds one has but how you use the ones you do have. The sad thing is, I did make up a spreadsheet to track my molds, but when I impulse buy at auctions or gunshows, I often forget that I already have one. Case in point, I recently grabbed a mold off of Ebay, remembering how much I had liked the sample bullets someone had sent me a few years ago. When it arrived, I went to add it to the spreadsheet, and discovered I already had a 2 cavity, and a 4 cavity, of the mold I had just bought a 1 cavity of. I hadn't cast with either of the others, so I didn't remember having them... talk about embarrassing.

For the reloaders that have 151 molds or more ... Why so many?

I collect the molds themselves as much as the guns that I shoot the bullets in.

For instance, I've got more than 50 .32 caliber molds, because anytime I see one I don't have, I want to try it. So, I've got different 32 molds ranging in age from the 1880's to last month. I've got a number of duplicates, but I've also got a bunch of 'almost' duplicates. For instance, I've got both winchester's and Ideal's version of the .32 colt NP bullet design, they're very similar, but not identical. The I've also got Winchester's version if the .32-20 marlin lightweight bullet, which is again, very similar to the .32 NP molds, but not quite the same. all 3 of those molds were made between 1906 and 1914. They're all pretty rare, and I couldn't stand the thought of letting them languish unloved.

Long story short, the answer is addiction.

Pretty sure if I were to count again I'd have to change my vote. Been a very good year for new moulds. My resolution for 2015 is to cast with all the moulds (and shoot all the leverguns) I bought in 2014. That should keep me too busy for new moulds or any more old leverguns. With the exception of one new mould on my NOE wish list I'm going to see if I can make it thru 2015 without buying a mould or a rifle. Wish me luck!
