Have a friend that wants to get some gas checks for his pistol bullets which are .453 dia cast from his mould . Will hornaday .45 cal rifle gas checks work for his pistol .453 bullets ?? or is there a regular check for the pistol bullets .
Thanks

As far as I know the Hornady checks come in two 45's a 457 + or - and a 451 + or-. One works good for rifle bullets and will cover 457 to 460 and the pistol size wil cover from 451 to 454. I have never tried a 457 on a pistol bullet and I will have to do so and let you know how it works.
I shoot very few gas checked bullets in the 45 calibers.

I only know of one Hornady 45 caliber gas check--maybe I've been messing up for while, but I use the Hornadys I order from Midway on both handgun and rifle applications. Somebody wise me up if I'm missing something.

I do know that 375 gas checks work on the .367"/9.3mm boolits, so there is some leeway there--about the same is with the two 45's.

I just looked at Hornady's web site to check.
They list 1 45 cal gas check #7140
I have used it on both rifle and pistol bullets
I have not had any problems so I hope I have been using the right one

............Yeah, I thought Hornaday only had the one. Of course it wouldn't surprise me if they had 2 and I'd just been getting the one all these years. :D

Gator DOES have two 45 cal checks though.

Larry is off and on with his manufacturing, and might not have what you want when you want it. Go through Bull Shop and/or Mountain Molds. ... felix

The GC shanks for the .458 bullets have an ID of about .425" (that's right .425", not .452")(going from memory here guys) so they'll not fit.

I had the bright idea of sizing down the base band in steps and installing a GC on a 457122HP. I finally assembled all of the intermediate sized dies required but haven't attempted it yet./beagle

Hornady 45 Gas Checks is a some time stay on if you are sizing .460+ or above, won't crimp on. That is according to Dan at Mountain Molds. I bought some from Creeker that work great on .460+, I just hope I have enough until he sets up shop again!
