I have been reading the forum for the last six months and have learned more about casting lead boolits than in the last forty five years of casting lead and lead alloys. Picked up a Lyman 32-20 mold that casts 115 grain boolits. Using an alloy 50% lead and 50% lynotype I size .312 and load 327 mag with amazing results. Re-size some to .309 and load 30-30 for a mod 94 with not so spectacular results. Anyone else experiment along these lines? Interested in feedback.

I mostly load in the 32 S&W long and .32 H&R mag, but I've found the lyman 3118 (later 311008) and the 31133 to be very easy to get to shoot well in both calibers. I tend to stick around or below 1000 FPS, so I cast them pretty soft and size .313 or .314 depending on the gun.

Being a tightwad with lino I think I would lower the lino content until the boolits don't cast well.

I cast Lyman 311316, relatively soft, 50/50 PB/WW, size .313, seat gas check and run fast from two different 327 FM revolvers. Great combination. I have sized it down to .310 and used in 30-30 and 30 Carbine in Contenders, Ruger Black Hawks. I never had much luck with it in Marlin or Winchester 30-30 Carbines. I use it's plain base equivalent, 3118, in 5 different Colt 32-20 revolvers with great success. Good design bullet, whether plain or checked.

.310 or .311 will probably work better in your 30-30. IME, you cut your group size by a third when you go up from .309 to .310. .311 can be even better, provided you can chamber them. My Savage bolt action won't chamber a boolit larger than .310, so that's what I size at, but my Winchester's generally like the boolits even larger. I have used the 311-316 gc over 17.5 grains of 2400 and the 311-008 (3118) over 8.5 grains of Unique or Herco with very good results.

Thanks for the feedback. I have never posted on any forum before so I hope you bare with me.
Different question about 45-70. Has anyone shot round ball out of a Sharps? I had shoulder replacement last year and I am trying to reduce all recoil to acceptable levels to keep shooting.
This should probably be a new thread but if I understand the rules correctly, I am not allowed to open new threads?

I load a plain base 3118 in a 1931 OP it's accurate, with the 313316 it is very accurate. Both sized to .314 for the Colt and .313 in my 1894 CL Marlin.

Round ball in the 45-70 is done frequently with smokeless and BP. Lyman also made a "collar button" mold for gallery shooting which will accomplish the same thing. I got a copy of it when Walt was still making molds at NEI, I think one of our makers may have a copy or it could be easily done.

Thanks Wayne for your reply on the round ball. I cast a .490 round ball then run it thru a .459 Lee sizing die and get an oblong cylinder, round on one end and flat on the other. Thinking about lubing with Bore Butter but am not sure about lube since there are no grooves. May be a while before there is decent enough weather to try this.

Welcome to CastBoolits mayored,

I would cut back on the lino also, it's gotten to be a bit tough to find and I don't think what your shooting needs the hardness or the brittleness. After going a few years without finding any I just gave up looking for it.

I've had good luck in the 30 Carbine Blackhawk and 32-20 Contender with 311410. There's a group buy from Miha for this boolit but alas it closed yesterday.

the 311316 and 3118 shot in all of the 30 calibers i have tried them in.Don't try to drive the 3118 too fast and it will shoot(1200-1300 is fine). The 311316 is pretty good to about 1800.

Lots of work here with the 32-20 WCF in revolvers and rifles. Lyman #311316 @ .313" does well in my Marlin 94 CCL, and remains accurate to 1800 FPS like H. Pope posted. I use your same alloy equivalent, 92/6/2. In revolvers, WW alloy is fine and gas checks are superfluous--just make sure to match or exceed throat dimensions. My Colt Bisley likes them at .311", the S&W likes .314". So much for caliber-matching rifle and revolver!

I also suffer the same consequence as 9.3. Lots of different throat and bore sizes in different firearms. But what a great little cartridge and a blast to shoot...
