so.

i have developed a home brew way similar to the lee hand loader to reload my own .410 shells.

however, i am not sure on what hulls are the best for reloading.

i would prefer to reload 3" shells,
but i also have some 2.5'' that i might as well do as well.

i have some estate shells, and some Remington nitro golds.

are these good shells to use?
i did some reading that says Winchester super-x .410 hulls are good,
but i am seriously considering some magtech brass shells, or even reloading the russian golden bear shells that are brass plated steel.

if i go with either the of the brass or steel/brass shells i will adapt them to use 209 primers for ease of reloading.

thank you for reading.

Sounds like you are crimping and if so go for the skived. If roll crimping get unskived. I would get 3" high brass and then cut them down when worn out and use them as 2 1/2"

thank you, those are very afordable hull prices.

yes, my plan was to crimp the shells, and then cut down and reuse as they wear down.

but i am serriously considering the idea of a roll crimper.

whats the major advantages of each?

Andrew,
A while back I started a similar thread. Many suggestions for hulls but none were readily available. The suppliers that listed Winchester and Remington fired hulls and new hulls were all back ordered.
I found that Graf's had new Chedditte (2-1/2" and 3") hulls for about what they were charging for fired Win. and Rem. hulls and no waiting. Using these hulls I taught the kids to load their own .410 shells on a MEC 600 under my supervision. We loaded up 500 of these and have not cycled through them yet to see how they hold up to reloading.
Just a thought.
Good luck, jmsj

i have thought about the chedditte hulls, but i have heard about the plastic seperating from the brass base, and that has me worried.

i was thinking of the fiocchi hulls, they are only $1 more for 100

"i was thinking of the fiocchi hulls, they are only $1 more for 100"

I would too. Roll crimp less pressure. Need overshot card - loads look cool

I would have bought Fiocchis too but at the time all that was available anywhere were the Cheddittes. I use Fiocchi hulls in all my slug loads and I know they are good.

i have yet to find a recepie that lists the chedditte hulls or fiocchi.

i think i may just buy some winchester HS hulls,
and mabe some of the Russian brown bear shells.

With Cheddittes, I use 14.5 gr WC820 with a Windjammer wad and 1/2 oz #9s for skeet. WAA primers. Dirty, but they shoot well.

I fooled around with loading .410 a few years ago. I found that the Winchester HS hulls were the best by far, like 5 or 10 times better than anything else in .410. I also found out that .410 hulls vary dimensionally by quite a bit from brand to brand. The loading dies that worked well with one brand of hull did not work well with another brand.

That is for the 2.5 inch hulls.

oh okay

right now im doing a basic load of 12 grains of 2400 with 1/2 oz of shot in a Remington gold nitro hull.
i have not yet shot them.
as of this point, i am getting crimps that are "okay"
i am definatly thinking of getting one of the star shape crimp starter tools, and also a roll crimping tool.

either way, i see the metal 410 shells being the end solution, but for now, its just going to be a order of 100 plastics
to last and slowly buying more and more of the metal ones.

In a pinch, you can use .444 Marlin rifle brass for .410 shells. Over cards glued in when loaded.

i have read about the .444 marlin brass, and i looked at all my stores around here...none.
if i could happen across some, but if im going to go online to get it, im getting 3"
