I really enjoy messing around (accept when it goes bad :() with making various rounds and experimental projectiles (wood, glue, etc) and was looking in the shotgun section which got me thinking about my newly acquired 500.

there seems to be a good amount of space in the shell for a decent sized load, something like a 410. this is just for the sake of messing around/paper punching.

has anyone attempted such a thing?

i made one shell using a gas 50 cal gas check about half way into the case and filled it with shot and another gas check on top. i also used a 50 call muzzle loader projectile,

well to play with. use your check and take food wrap and make a shot cup. if you roll it right it will fit very tight in the case. and will work for close bird work in barn or snakes if you have them up there .
we Have a GLAD press&seal here it works very good in a 45 colt

what gun powder do you suggest, at my own risk of course?

I made some for my 454. I took a spent round and sharpend it with a chamfer tool. Then used that to cut wads from a cerial box. Loaded them with 9 shot then covered it with bees wax.

I have been thinking about the same idea but using a barrel bored smooth. Rifled barrels suck for shot loads. The .500 S&W should have as much capacity as a .410. Being built on a rifled action it would be possible to load a much heavier and higher velocity slug load in a .500 S&W than a .410 shotshell.

I guess a 28ga wad would be just a tad too big. I don't have one to measure.
