If you do a search you will get a lot of great info on this. I use a RCBS 270-150gr GC and 2400 out of a Ruger #1 with great results.

How does this round do as a lead only. Of course it uses a gas check but how does it fare on impact. Is it a good hunting round as well as a target round?

+1 on the RCBS 150-grainer. Cast it from 50/50 wheel weights/pure plus 1% tin total and water-quench them straight from the mould. After about a month they will achieve full hardness but still be malleable. Sent them downrange at around 2K fps and they will do nicely on paper or game.

As for the original question of a source for pre-cast, perhaps some of our members who are in the commercial boolit business will weigh in.

Probrably similar to a 30-30.

Do you have to size these bullets from this type mold? Also what lubing process are you using on the rifle bullets?

Depends on the size they come out and the throat of your particular rifle. I seat the checks on mine in a Lyman 45, push them through a custom sizer die mounted in a single-stage reloading press, and then back through the Lyman 45 for lubing. Your milage may vary.

The SAAMI 270 throat is supposed to start at at a couple "tenths" over .278" and sloooowly taper to groove diameter of .277" in about .3" inches. I would say you're gonna need a tough alloy in the .2780" to .2785" range. I like Gear's method of production and would probably set myself up with a couple dies too, assuming my mold drops 'em at a nice round .279-.280".

If you water drop from the mold and don't get around to checking and sizing until a week or so later, reducing the long, skinny boolit from .280"+ to .2780"-.2785" with a base first sizer could bend the boolit noses. It's always a good idea to have a nose first sizer in your toolkit. However, I always seat/crimp gaschecks with base first sizers.
