I just got my Pacymyr grip and forend for my contender.

I was excited! NOW I can put my 44 mag barrel on and shoot it!

I have one box of 50 factory stuff, and I started to look around for other 44 cal bullets I SHOULD have.

I can't believe I don't have any! (I bet I do I just ain't found em yet...)

Sooooooooo, with NO bullets and looking to get some, what design and wt would you recommend (cast of course) for hunting deer with?

This is for my 10" contender brl.

I'm thinking 2400 is the powder to start with....

If you don't want to spend a bunch, Lee's heavy WFN profile gas check shoots great in my 10" .44 Contender. These weigh at 315 grs. and have a very wide flat nose. I never shot them with 2400, but it would probably work fine. A fairly mellow charge of H-110 pushed them to 1,325 fps. average, and shoot around 1/2" at 50 yds.

Yes, great boolit, works great on deer. I use 21.5 gr's of 296 with it.

That lee WFN is a GREAT hunting bullet and I have found it very accurate out to 150 where it looses its stability ( I am a silhoutte shooter so long distances apply) however, this bullet will bag deer and some quite larger animals without a hitch. However, if you are a spendthrift like myself, you may be interested in a plain base bullet: if so look no further than the classic Keith design. Have fun with that contender.

Darrel, I've used the old Kieth SWC over the years, for deer and antelope. 240 gr., and they have always sailed right through. If you needed a heavier bullet, Uncle Elmer would have been shooting it.

I have just purchased this mold. What alloy do you use with this bullet? I plan on hunting feral hogs & deer with these bullets & a 9-1/2" super redhawk. I typically use h-110 for heavy hunting loads. I use the pb 240 swc over unique for plinking.

The mold I just purchased was the lee wfn 310 gr gas check.

What a coincidence, I have been using 20.5 grains of h110 with the Lee 44. WFN: extremely accurate, however it does shoot very high in my blackhawk. I usually aim 2" low at 25 yards 5" low at 50 and right on at 100. However, at 100 yards it is as accurate as the shooter and it is not hard at all to blast plastic milk jugs at this distance. Surprisingly, the recoil does not increase dramatically with bullets in the 300gr range.

all right!

can someone point me to an exact mould number for the "keith" style bullet. It seems that so many people and companies throw around the "keith" moniker that I don't know what it really is!

and that Lee mould is what number? just so I'm looking at the right one...

thanks guys!

and since I have an abundance of Bluedot, anybody use it with good results?

This may be the definitive "Keith" thread to look over Darrell. Have fun.

A few things to consider... will you only shoot these bullets in your Contender? And what's the bore slug at? I've heard comments that the Lee, in spite of being listed at .430 as it drops from the mould, will sometimes only go .429. Using a GC and pushing it hard enough it may slug up some and work if your bbl. is bigger than that.

My Contender .44 bbl. slugs exactly .429 but my Marlin goes to .43150. I got a Saeco 250 gr. RNFPGC so it'd feed well in the Marlin and also work in the T/C. It was a good choice. It works well in both and drops out at .431 using Lyman #2 alloy. The meplat is wide enough that it worked well on deer last fall. Out of the T/C it goes just over 1600 FPS with a good charge of H110. With the same load it goes just over 1800 in the Marlin. Good all-purpose bullet for the .44's.

I believe the RCBS 44-250K is the closest commonly available mold. Tony

Blammer,
used to have a t/c super14 in 44mag, and I used a LEE 310 GC design (#90858) 2 cav mold over 15.0 gr charge of Bluedot. It's a gc design bot never used a gc on it just cast it out of ww/lino mix. never had any leading. didn't own a chrono at the time, it was just the best shooting load. would get 1/2" center to center 3 shot groups at 50 yards. used a 2.5 power scope w/duplex crosshairs. gun would shoot better than I could:mrgreen:

my brl slugs at .4300 and it is presently the only 44 mag I have.

I also shoot the Lee 310 gr. GC model. [straight WW/alox, w/ GC]. A couple of different double action revolvers [a Smith and a Ruger R.H.] shoot 17.5 gr of 2400, really well. In my [old] contender, 15 gr of blue dot worked well , but, 21.4 gr of 4227 was better, even tho the velocity was equal! [abt 1250 fps in 10" bbl] These loads were OK in my testing... you should consult a reliable manual[had to CMA] !!! BTW I gave my Pachy forend away!!!! Seemed to have a bad effect on accuracy in my piece!! HTH.. MV
