View Full Version : .45 acp concealed carry, are there any real CC .45s?

I've been looking for a good .45 for CCW. My first effort resulted in a Sig 245, which I consider a nice gun, but not too concealable. I've decided that I like the 6 or 7 shot single stacks with as short a barrel as possible. A 45 needs some weight to slow down recoil so 22 to 28 ozs.. Kahr makes a nice pistol about like I described, anyone have any experience with this gun? Cobra arms makes what could be a clone of the Kahr (lower quaility I'd guess). Detonics, and AMT made some little .45s, but detonics are expensive, and too many owners ended up cussing their AMTs. If possible, I'd like to have a single/double action trigger, cocking the hammer really changes the grip strength of the little pistols. I don't like pumping a trigger. Colt Mustang maybe, if I could find one. Any ideas or advice is/are solicited, and will be appreciated.

XDS 45 is one I'm really into. EAA also makes several carry version .45 acp's as well as the run of 1911 variants as stated:

Bond arms have several barrel configurations that can be added to their frames for about $150 if you buy one. They are rarely available as .45 ACP directly:

I have a Springfield Armory Ultra Compact that I carry. Ii is a bit smaller than the officer's model and is comfortable in a Crossbreed IWB holster, but it is fairly heavy since it is an all steel gun. I am thinking about replacing it with a Springfield XD-S in .45 as it is even smaller and much lighter.

In the winter it's not a problem to carry a full size .45 acp handgun under a Carhart vest, but in warmer weather it's more difficult. I often carry my full size Springfield XD in the winter. It's comforting to have those 14 rounds of .45 acp available in a good concealment holster from Don Hume Leather Goods. I've also carried one of my full size 1911's the same way. A good holster will allow the carrying of many handguns, but a bad holster won't let you carry a good handgun, if that makes any sense.

In the summer, I carry a Sig P238, .380 acp, in my back pocket, under a folded hankerchief and a square of heavy leather the same size as my pocket. It just looks like I'm carrying a wallet in that pocket.

Hope this helps.

Never shot one and could not afford one but those Kimber Ultras seem very nice. I have sold raffle tickets for them for our Friends of the NRA events and they always sell out.

I would think any Compact or Officers model 1911 would not be bad heck I some times carry my full size tactical with no issues.

Colt Officer's model. It don't get no better.
I have to agree. I tried a Glock 27 and liked it ok but I really like 1911's (and especially the OACP, but any of the major makers are probably very good) so when I found one I jumped on it. I carry mine in a Winthrop IWB @ 2-3 o'clock with an Aker belt and while I know it's there it's still very comfortable. I've carried it in the summer with just a T-shirt on and felt it was concealed well. Perhaps a trained person might notice it but most people are too absorbed with their own lives to notice me. I'd say get what you like and then find a quality holster.

"In the winter it's not a problem to carry a full size .45 acp handgun"

I live in Florida. My winter is warmer than some of you guys summer. With shorts and a Tshirt an in the waistband holster with a 1911 is not even noticable. You get used to the weight very quickly. As I once read somewhere, carrying a gun is not necassarily meant to be comfortable. It's meant to be comforting.

I have carried a Taurus pt145 for 5 years. It is a double stack 10+1 and comes in at 27 oz empty I think. It is thinner than the glock and just fits my hand better. The price is hard to beat too. They retail for 430 or so new. I also live in Florida and it conceals under a tshirt fine.

I CC a full size 1911 TRP with rail in my waist band. I'm 6' and 170 lbs. I'm just careful how I bend over but that's the only time I would print. I just bend more at the knee to pick stuff up.

I carry a 5" 1911, a Glock 22, or a Ruger Vaquero .45 Colt as my main, and then either a RIA Compact 3.5" 1911 or a Ruger SP-101 .357 as my BUGs and this is my all year, anywhere, anytime carry. They all conceal well. The trick is to wear a good stiff belt that will actually spread the weight of the guns and a good holster. I'm always amazed at the tiny guns people carry while claiming that they just couldn't conceal anything substantial. At least youve chosen a good caliber to start with so you're not handicapping yourself from the start. I would say choose whichever gun that you're willing to carry and then figure out which of those you can shoot best. Once that is settled to your satisfaction, then just figure out a way to conceal it. Most hide much easier than people would think. So carry what you like, not just what is tiny.

I have this gun also and so far love it. A lot of people are against the Taurus but mine has worked perfectly with just about any loads so far. I have a couple friends in law enforcement who have tried it and they like it and may get one for off duty. The PT 745 is the same but in single stack so it's thinner. I did change the sights to a high viz type.

+1 My daily carry is a full size 1911 in a galco summer comfort inside the waistband holster.

Also barrel length isn't typically what makes a gun hard to conceal its the grip width and length that will make your gun print easily.

I carry a 5" 1911 lightweight .45 on and off duty, all the time. Have for years. The key is not the gun but the leather. I use Greg Kramer's Pro-Line holster and belt. The belt is double stitched horse hide from the breast of the horse, where the hide is the thickest. Then buy only pants with belt loops to accomodate the 1 1/4" belt.

Ive been carring various 1911's for over 45 years including examples with 5", 4.25" and 3.5" barrels.. and im really a 1911 guy.
The one was carring for the past 19 years is a Para ordance P12 3.5" barrel with a alumium frame , ed brown grip saftey & ambi saftey and trijucon night sights. I now prefer the single stacks over the dubl stack mags for CCW a few years ago a friend had me shoot his Kahr , i really liked it alot , in 2 years i have aquired 3 of them a PM9 , CW45and a TP45 I really like them and they are now my CCW guns and i have mostley retired my other 1911's for carry.
All of my Kahr's are accurate & reliable after many thousands of rounds. I would give them a A+ rating !

I really wanted to like the Kahr 45. I love my P9 Covert, and paid a premium for the P45 when it first came out. I could not get a reliable one, and Kahr went above and beyond in trying to fix my problems, but I eventually traded the pistol at a loss for a Glock 30 that works every time but I can't shoot well. I'm heading back to the 1911 as my CCW platform, but am hoping to see a Springfield XDS Compact 45 soon.

BEFORE you buy anything, try out the Glock 36. Its a 6+1 compact, lightweight, powerhouse that is accurate. BTW, my 5'2", 98lb daughter is carrying mine right now stoked with Winchester Ranger ammo. Lone wolf even has a drop in aftermarket barrel for it if you're so inclined; also a threaded version. Just remember, your CCW is an "all day" carry affair.

Now, what do you feel like carrying now? Lol!

Good Luck, just my .02 worth.

I'm not a great fan of the small 45. I have owned several, including a custom made "shorty" and my experience has been that they either don't shoot as well as a full size 5" 45 or else they don't hold up as well or both. The advantage of a smaller 45 is really quite small anyway is you are only losing an inch or two from the snout and maybe less than an inch in the handle. So for a minimal reduction in size, you usually give up some accuracy, some controllability and some reliability as the frame and slide stop take a beating from the lighter weight slide.

That has just been my experience, so I just obt for a regular size 1911 and find it really no more difficult to conceal than a smaller version unless I'm wearing shorts.

I've rented a kahr cw45 and shot 40 rounds, I was pleased with it. I carried the government 1911 in the army as well, even concealed at times. for ccw, I would go with the kahr, much thinner and smaller.

I ended up switching to .40 s&w and have a kahr cw40 and am pleased with it.

If you want to carry a 45, you have to carry what you are comfortable shooting. I love my 1911's, and I carry my "Cast Boolits Kimber Ultra Carry" (thanks again everyone!!!!!) as my EDC. Wherever I go, it goes with. It has been mentioned before but DO NOT dismiss the most important piece of gear for CC- the gunbelt. I have been carrying CCW for the better part of 2 decades and I can tell you that is the one thing that will make it or break it for most people. Take a look at Jerry Bissell gunbelts at www.jbgunbelts.com you cant go wrong for the money. Give one a shot- If you hate it, I guarantee if you don't like it someone will take it off your hands for what you paid for it.

I wrestled with the question of what to carry and settled on a keltec pf9 cause it's so ligth you don't even notice it. I chose it mostly due to the weigth and it's small size only .88 inch thick. I have carried G17, G27, P11, Pt145. For me the 9 was the best option for summer tshirts and shorts. BUT ... Now that the Xds is out there I'm looking for one now it's .90 inch wide (1" officially due to the slide release) but should be very comfortable to carry. Just need to shoot one to see if we get along8-)

After reading ALL the above, I'm about to change my carry
gun. I see nobody carries what I feel is a great one to carry.
For 'bout 20+ years it's been "SMITH & WESSON 645". Gives
me 8+1 shots (you'll never use them all, but????). Single
stack, great sights. I stand 6'4" and weigh 230 lbs. and it
feels good. After 36 yrs. of carrying a revolver (open carry)
I went to the range at least twice a week just to "get the
hang of the change". First shot is double action, the rest of
the stack is all single. On second thought, I'd rather not make
that change.. Best of luck to y'all. bigmac

I have carried a full size 1911 for years without an issue. I carry it in the pants with my shirt over it in the summer and in a waist holster under my jacket in winter. About a year ago I bought and Rock Island officers model that I have been carrying in lieu of my full size pistol and am perfectly satisfied with it. It is accurate and I only loose 1 round of capacity but save a few ounces of weight and it is a bit more compact but actually no easier to conceal.

Thank you all for your imput. I don't wear a belt, and that about does it for anything with a lot of weight (does it anyway for "pocket" carry). I use a belly band and can conceal some large (Sig 245) guns inside the top of my pants that way. Kel Tec P11 is nice and light, but must be loaded way down or it rips the skin off of my hand. Kahr trigger is spozed to be much better too. I'm thinking xds, or maybe older sig, or even an astra 75, though not really light (beats 44 ozs hollow though). The Kahr PM (I think) series is very small and does come in 40 S&W, though I think you might need the longer grip of the CW4543. I'll probly just sit on this for a while, and let my thinking crystalize, not like I don't have something already to carry.

I have to confess that I traded for that pistol after seeing it. I am definitely NOT a person who is impressed by "Bling" - however, in this case, the pistol was so dern pretty that I had to add it to the collection.

The surprise came when I found how well it shot. My first loads were with the H&G 130 short nosed SWC and it fed them perfectly and shot to point of aim at 25 yards. How nice it was ("Pretty is as pretty does"...)

X2 on the little Para Ordnances. I carry the P-10 which is the predecessor to the Warthog. It's a solid no-frills 3" .45

Pretty darn accurate, and quite reliable. The only bad thing is that 10 or 11 rounds of .45 ammo gets heavy after a long day.

I have a 1911 officers model that I carry all the time but I also have a Taurus PT 145 that is a great carry gun. It holds 11 rounds with the chamber loaded and weights is several oz less than my Officers model and it is more compact. I carry it in the summer in an in the pants holster and it disappears nicely. I love 1911s but I have never had a single problem with the Taurus so I have confidence in it.

I have one and love it. I once sold it and got lucky enough to be able to get it back. I actually had to cdps with officers sized grip frames one with the 3 inch barrel and one with the 4. I ended up getting rid of the 3 inch gun. It was cute but the 4 inch gun was just more reliable, more accurate (alothough both shot real well) and not a bit harder to conseal. Most of what prints on a 1911 is the grip frame. I use a iwb holster and barrel lenght just doesnt matter much. The cdps arent cheap but for around a grand you can buy one and they have about everything out of the box thats need to make it a great ccw gun. they have features comparable and quality comparable to guns that cost twice the asking price. Ive allway said that a kimber cdp is probable the best bang for the buck of ANY 1911. Again there not cheap but add up what youd pay to get everything done to them that kimber does and youll see what kind of bargin they are.

Ive recently bought some glocks and have found them to be great guns. I picked up a 20,23 and a 26. I thought the 26 would make a great gun for ccw. It IS RELIABLE no doubt but that chubby little gun just isnt comfortable to me to carry iwb. I can put a 1911 there and forget i have it on. that little glock reminded me all day long it was there. I kept the other two but the 26 went down the road. Its just tough to beat the slim profile and the consealability of a commander or a officers sized 1911. Plus there just cool.
Kimber CDP which is basically a Commander length Officers ACP(4" barrel & 1/2" shorter grip frame). LOVE mine...

I finally found a Springfield Armory XDS 45 ACP and love it. However, it is teaching me new things about reloading 45 ACP. My Kimber Compact, Colt 1911s, and Glock 30 will eat almost anything; not so the XDS. These things are tight, and really require a taper crimp to .470. Crimping to .470 is HOLY **** THAT IS A LOT OF CRIMP for me, but anything less than that means ejecting an unfired round ain't happening without using the edge of a bench to push the slide against. Only one range session so far, but I think my new reloading practices will solve the few problems I had.
Reliability does have me wondering why I don't just stick with the Kimber, but the XDS is more slim and much lighter.

I carry a Para Ordnance p12 that Kent Singletary slicked up for me. 12 in the handle and one in the pipe. 1 1/2" at 25 yards if I do my part. Couldn't ask for more. Rod

often thought about trying one of those 3 inch lda paras. If it ran well i think it could be about the ideal ccw 1911. Pull and shoot with no safetys.

I have an RIA officers model which carries well behind the right hip. I have a menickle belt, but just a cheap tagua holster. It hides under a light shirt. I 95 % of the time carry a Birdshead vaquero in 45 acp in a mernickle holster. recently I have been packing 2- the vaquero and the blackhawk. One behind the hip ( the blackhawk) and the vaquero on crossdraw. I'm 6 feet 190 and slim waisted so have never had an issue hiding any of these under an untucked shirt. When I carry the two revovlers I do wear a vest. The Rock Island compact is cost friendly, shoots well, feeds whatever I chamber and is remarkably accurate. It does wear out recoil springs quickly. I have never had any issue with weight, even carrying two single actions and ammo in pouches: as others have stated a good belt and leather combo is the difference. I, myself, never considered weight, but chose the weapons for carry I was most proficient with and have the most punch. If Texas was an open carry I'd carry the 7 1/2 blackhawk and alternate the smaller one and the vaquero as second guns. YMMV

XDS is only 1/16" wider and 1/4" longer than a keltec PF9. Heavy enough to handle .45 recoil.
they now have plus1 & plus 2 mags so for CC 7+1 with Jhp +p will do the job well.

Years ago I carried a Lightweight two tone Officers model. Nice compact .45 that weighed 24-27oz or so, same weight and size as my 6906. Didn't shoot it as well as compared to my full size 5" 1911 but it carried better. My son currently carries a G30.

Sig P220 Carry in a Crossbreed Horsehide holster here.

Nice to see that most of us had the same cartridge choice - can't beat a good ol .45

I would love to pick up one of those Kimbers though...

I've had a Star PD for a couple of years now and really like it. It has an Aluminum frame and is pretty light, holds 6 rounds, has adjustable sights. I paid about $325 for mine and see them listed from 250-350ish.

Springfield Compact 1911, basically a officers frame with a commander slide and Novak night sights and ambidextrous safety. Carry in Crossbreed super tuck IWB. shoots really well and has been 100% reliable so far.

Are there any real CC .45s?

I think that the posts here have shown that you can conceal just about any .45 except maybe the Thompson submachine gun and I wouldn't rule that out!

My son carries a Springfield XDS in a IWB holster and talon grips. I have personally shot it and is as accurate as my XD. It just barks a little louder and massages your hand a tad more.

Second range session today with the XD-S. It was flawless through 100 rounds of assorted brass, NOE BD45-210 HP over 6.0 Unique, and Tula LP primer. Did have one primer failure, and the round also failed to fire in the 1911. Learned one thing today - the XD-S is a great carry platform; reliable, lightweight, and thin. Confirmed another thing today - if I ever have to defend myself or family from any threat with a handgun, I want a 1911. I'll carry the XD-S, but am thinking about a compact alloy frame 1911 as the perfect CCW.

Yup, but I really prefer to not push that issue, a sawed off shotgun is easy to conceal if you try hard enough.

I have 2 45ACPs I use for CC. One is a Mk4 Series 70 Colt and the other is a Sig P220. Both full size. Carry and conceal easily, for me anyway.

Me too. Back when I worried about such things, I carried my Colt 1911A1 in an El Paso Saddlery pancake holster under my right kidney. Never felt encumbered.

I'm not a real heavy guy and I have no problem with a Colt Commander in a pancake holster from Roy Baker, carried it for years.

I am 6' 180 and I carry either the Sig or the Colt tucked in my waist band behind my right hip and it works just fine.

Take a look at Kimber's Ultra RCP II and the comparable Colt New Agent. Both are 3" barreled, aluminum frame guns with gutter sights and low weight.

My Rock Island Officer's Model (akaCompact) is almost as heavy as my RIA GI model, but the 3.5" barrel allows for nice IWB concealment, with any sort of untucked shirt, vest, or jacket. Shoots like a dream, up close and fast.

Tough to find but I carry a S&W CS 45. They are, as far as I am concerned one of the finest CCW pistols ever made.
