Gentlemen,

I notice on the Cast Bullets section that JoeB33050 did a table of BHN test results. The format of the table (data in rows and columns) exists in the little yellow popup that shows me what the thread is about when my cursor touches the topic, but when I bring the thread up, the table has no format, the data being just text in line with nothing tabulated.

I myself have tried to make tables of powder charges, bullets, chronograph velocities and group sizes. By using the space bar to separate the data, a fair table can be made, but when it is previewed or submitted, the numbers are similarly just jammed together as text.

It looks as if the submission should be doable in tabular form if the yellow teaser shows such a format. Is there a way to do this, and, if so, how is it done?

Thanks,

Bent

Good morning, Bent.

If you have Excel or similar program, it is possible to import data contained in a delinated comma text file. For example, the below text file -

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16
111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116

will be imported by Excel into a 6 column spreadsheet. Afterwards, you can format the data as needed.

Such a file is small in size and fast to send/receive.

Hope this is helpful.

Bob

Bent Ramrod, if you don't have Excel you can get a good program at OpenOffice.org (http://OpenOffice.org)
It's a freeware program that is comparable to Microsoft Office. You can do word processing, drawings, spreadsheets and presentations. It will also open Microsoft files that you may have saved...Ray

To my knowledge as of right now, it's not possible to display a table in your forum posts. This is because HTML is not enabled for posts. If I find a way to do it, I will let you know.

Use the {CODE} {/CODE} tags around your table text (using square brackets, of course). This changes text to monospace and preserves formating. Example:

col1 col2 col3
row1 x y z
row2 a b c

Thank you, gentlemen, all.

It seems that Imashooter 2 has what is closest to what I wished to do. I don't have Excel on this computer and didn't want to make it an enclosure.

Bullet Powder Charge Weight Velocity Group, inches

3118 4759 11.0 gr 1665 ft/sec 2-1/4"

Hey, it works! Thanks, Imashooter2! :-)

No problem. FWIW, you used {HTML}{/HTML} tags and not CODE/CODE. The output was similar in this case, but will be more consistant if you use CODE/CODE. If you click the quote button on my first post, you can see the usage.

For those of us who came to computers late in life, and even have trouble working through the "...for DUMMIES" books, could you go over this again, s - l - o -w- l - y, one step at a time? Will this help me take tables typed up on a MS "WORKS" (NOT "WORD"!) database or text and get it to hold format through e-mail? Thanks.

The CODE tags won't work for email at all, only on this board. Your best bet for email is to change message type to plain text (in Outlook Express, click the create new message button, then in the message window click the "format" menu and choose "plain text").

For this board, start your post as normal by clicking new topic or reply. In the post window type the word CODE in square brackets (the ones to the right of the letter P on your keyboard). Then enter the text you want to retain it's spacing for the table. When finished type the phrase /CODE in square brackets (that is a forward slash, the one below the question mark). I cannot show you the exact syntax, because the board interprets it as a command and does the action. To see the syntax, go to my post above with the table in it and click the reply with quote button. In the reply box, look at my text and see the format.

Many Thanks! This will save me a lot of frustration, as I have been making up a lot of tables.

..........imashooter, ditto! Thank you for reveiling another great mystery. I'd been using periods: ............................. between column entries to keep it spread out, and it wasn't the bets. Better, but not like your code/code thing. All I have to do now is remember it!

Case Primer Bullet Powder Grains Group@100

R-P FEDLRM 321297 H-4198 18.5 5/8"; 4 in 3/8"

Thanks again, Imashooter2!

It seems to work the same way with the HTML and the CODE in that a little moving of spaces is necessary to get the columns in line, but this will make data a lot clearer.

If you create the table in a plain text editior like notepad (or Works using a monospace font), you can copy and paste it directly.

1 2 3 4
23 34 45 56
345 567 789 901

Edit to add sample. If you try to type it into the board editor directly, you need to keep count of the spaces, because the board editor uses a proportional font.

Bent,

Have you used MS Access? You can build the database, create a report- easy to format. Or you can import Exel spreadsheet into Access then make your report searching or filtering for critical data w/formulas if needed.

Everything works in Word as long as every column is of equal width:

Blah blah blah
Blah blah blah
Blah blah blah

But as soon as you start changing sizes of the elements the Word "table" falls apart:

Blah florpin calmutix
1 732 16
74567 3 917

Microsoft Excel does the same:

blah florpin calmutix
1 732 16
74567 3 917

Saving Word as HTML and pasting into the board editor using HTML tags gives this:

<head>
<meta http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<meta name=Generator content="Microsoft Word 11 (filtered)">
<title>Blah</title>
<style>
<!--
/* Style Definitions */
p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal
{margin:0in;
margin-bottom:.0001pt;
font-size:16.0pt;
font-family:Arial;}
@page Section1
{size:8.5in 11.0in;
margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in;}
div.Section1
{page:Section1;}
-->
</style>

</head>

<body lang=EN-US>

<div class=Section1>

<p class=MsoNormal>Blah florpin calmutix</p>

<p class=MsoNormal>1 732 16</p>

<p class=MsoNormal>74567 3 917</p>

</div>

</body>

Just pasting the HTML code into the board editor without tags gives this:

<html>

<head>
<meta http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<meta name=Generator content="Microsoft Word 11 (filtered)">
<title>Blah</title>
<style>
<!--
/* Style Definitions */
p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal
{margin:0in;
margin-bottom:.0001pt;
font-size:16.0pt;
font-family:Arial;}
@page Section1
{size:8.5in 11.0in;
margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in;}
div.Section1
{page:Section1;}
-->
</style>

</head>

<body lang=EN-US>

<div class=Section1>

<p class=MsoNormal>Blah florpin calmutix</p>

<p class=MsoNormal>1 732 16</p>

<p class=MsoNormal>74567 3 917</p>

</div>

</body>

</html>

Using the code tags and a monospace font, everything stays in alignment:

Blah florpin calmutix
1 732 16
74567 3 917
