So, I have a Rem 30-s with a chamber neck too large. The choices are to whine about it and do nothing, get rid of the rifle for someone else to deal with, re-bore and rechamber or figure out a way to deal with it. After doing or considering all of the above I opted to deal with it and see what happens.
Brass - re-formed 30-06, annealed the necks
Powder - Alliant Steel (was going to use 2400 but managed to add H380 to it)
Primer - CCI LR
Boolit - NOE 7mm Hunter, 150 gr and handlubed with Ben's Red as dropped .2865"/.287"(no sizer yet).
Alloy - air cooled 50/50 pure/coww ~ bhn of 8
Rifle was scoped w/2.5x scope
50 yards:
5620456205
First 4 shot were 16 gr. from a cold clean bore, next 3 shots 17 grains go into nice cluster(scope change)
100 yards:
5620656207
Four shots w/ 17 grains was spread out (trigger?) then 5 shots w/16 grains settled in a little better.
Lesson of the day:
After working on j-word loads for an ar and a 22-250 I was assembling components. This time I crafted a load for THIS rifle. When snugged in the throat the NOE Hunter is just kissing the rifling. I will also neck size this brass just far enough to go to the base of the boolit. If I have to anneal the brass every loading to keep necks from splitting I will do so. If not needed so much the better. I am really amped up to start some serious work on loads for this rifle. I am happy.
Thanks to all who have offered suggestions. All were taken into consideration.
No more whining.
