I started Musky fishing recently with some success and decided I would try to make some stick baits. Seemed simple enough looking at a creek chub baby pikie so that' what I set out to replicate, only on a larger scale. I've since lost my original ones to the evil lake bottoms and birdsnests, which I would probably laugh at now anyway. Getting to the point, I decided to make a few for friends and family as gifts this year, which I am going to have a real hard time giving away. These start as a tree branch in the woods, to the lathe, to the bandsaw for the lip slot, then drilled for eye loops, and then paint and installing hardware. I'm still getting use to the airbrush, but I'm getting the hang of it. Anyone else have home made lures, I'd love to see them!

I wish i had the patience to make lures! They look awesome! I tried some trolling for musky this year... No luck. I fish lake Marburg in Hanover pa. Some big ones have come out of there.. Just not i the end of my line.

Excellent work

Do you troll or cast? We had one hit two years ago. The rod slammed down, was in a holder, my brother said I think I just got a hit... I was like yeah right 'hit' a patch of weeds... Well when we reeled the lines in that crank bait had teeth marks all over it. It was brand new...

Would you mind posting progression pics of one?

When I'm out by myself, or if its early in the morning and they are hitting the surface I'm casting. Otherwise we troll. I personally like to cast more and hit weed beds, vertical drops, and hideouts, but trolling has proved itself effective too. Yeah those teeth marks don't lie!
Sure I can do a step by step, I'll see what I can come up with.

Nicely done.

Your lures are bigger than the last few things I've caught! :D

They are almost laughable aren't they! I started making bigger ones at first for the fall fishing season. I read that most musky fisherman use big lures, 10 to 15+ inches during the fall months. Reason being the fish are bulking up and slowing down, getting pickier about what they are eating and making sure they don't waste too much energy chasing small meals. It makes sense, but the only fish we caught this fall were on 6" type jerk baits. We only made it out 2 times during prime fall season though unfortunately, the water was so very very low it was almost dangerous, then it dropped enough that no boats could use the ramp.
I sure had a busy day today, I'm going to try to get some pictures tomorrow.

Here's some attempts at copying some old punkinseeds.

Forgot to add that these were turned from red cedar and painted with rattle cans. Dale

I am a spinner fisherman myself. Some of my salmon spinners I have made. I use stainless mig wire, and a twist-tec to make them.

I painted mine with spray paint. The ones in the top 2 pics are clear coated with Devcon 2 ton epoxy. It makes an attractive and very durable finish. Dale

Cheated. Bought powder coated bells, and the painted blades. Salmon don't seem to mind, and makes it a little easier to swallow loosing 3 or 4 a trip. Those pesky fish are always on the bottom hugging a log.

Would any of you care to share a link to where you get your supplies?

Thanks,

It really is a shack. I stop by on my way to Corvallis sometimes if I see the truck out front.

Hey shootnsteel, I have a shadow box on my wall with a bunch of those old creek chubs and muskie / pike jigs. You are spot on! Looks super cool, my wife will execute me too if I start another hobby...

My neighbor turned me on to http://lurepartsonline.com/ for most of the hooks and lips. I just use stainless steel screw eyes from hardware stores for the hook and line anchors. For my paint I tag along with the wife to a craft store and pickup whatever water based bottles of paint I need, I like to use the metallics. Then I use a spray clearcoat, usually Rustoleum or Krylon crystal clear. I like the sounds of epoxy clear, I'll give that a try. I use a dab of expoxy when setting my screw eyes as well on the threads.
