I was thinking about getting a XXX299 mold. My rifle slugs at .309 and I've been sizing other bullets to .311 with pretty good success. I have read that Lyman molds tend to drop on the small side, especially when not using #2 alloy, so I wonder if I should go with the .314299? I will likely be using COWW. Is this asking too much of my .311 Lee push through sizer? Should I risk getting the 311299? Some are going to say forget Lyman and go with one of the more expensive molds that will drop the diameter it says, but I'm kinda on a budget and I gotta stay married.

If your rifle slugs at .309, your best bet will be the 311299. Even WW should cast at or just over .311. Just don't cast too hot.

My vote is 314299. I've been using both these boolits for a lot of years, and have some notes in an old Lyman manual from a long time ago about using 314299 and H4831 (which worked very well in a scoped '06). Of course, the onliest way to know for sure is to try both before buying a mould, and then HOPE the mould you are getting will be in tolerance (good luck with that with new Lyman moulds). I am very pleased with the NOE 314299. Take a looksee at this thread (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?168484-Hybrid-06-303-Lee-Neck-Sizer).

Sundog,

What was your load with H4831 and the 314299 if you don't mind sharing? I have an NOE 311299 and lots of Gator checks. I am trying to gather up some ideas for my son's Remington 721 in '06 for summer practice. I'd rather use cast as they are much more bang for the buck and relaxing to produce.

Thanks,
Doc

If you get the 314299, you can size it down for .308 guns, plus use it for 7.62X54 and .303 British.

.311 is my goal. It is just that I wasn't sure I would get that from a Lyman .311 mold, judging from what I had read. I didn't want to buy a .311 mold that dropped at .309 or .310. If the .311 mold will indeed drop at .311 or better, then I would be happy with that. But if it won't, I thought a .314 that dropped small could be sized to .311. I'm just not sure if sizing that much will result in work softening or other problems? Or is the Lyman quality thing blown out of proportion and their molds dropping small bullets are the exception rather than the rule?

If you're talking about using it in an '06, a .311" shank will probably give the best results. I'd worry more about the nose of 314299 being too fat to prevent chambering than sizing its shank down .003".

+1, unless you are using it in a worn barreled 1903 Springfield, or the like. If that is the case, 314299 might be a better choice. If your barrel slugs .309, this is a possibility. My Lyman 311299 casts at LEAST .311, or a little over depending on the alloy.

Next is to speed em up a bit , if I can find time !!!

You'll be fortunate to have a 311299 that would drop at .311 I sold mine as it would make about .310 with a nose of .298 at the wide part.
Went with the Lyman 314299
