She was a 60 yard shot, put one in her heart and one in the neck to make sure she wouldn't run any farther down the mountain. Good Eatin. Took her on Owl mountain third day of the second season.

nice looks like the boolits didn't mess her up to bad either judging from the lack of blood.

Longrifle,

Congrats!!! Good eating this winter!

Surprised you found the boolit, but possibly it has something to do with the beginning weight, and the ending weight of about 185gr.

I was supprised to to find the boolit which took my 2011 cow, but it was a quartering shot and the boolit took out a bunch of heavy bone before a rib, the lungs, all the way through a huge and heavy paunch and stopped just under the hide.

1600 - 1700fps muzzle, starting wt of 465gr and retreaved weight of 327.9gr.

That big flat nose is awesome in the game taking department.

Thanks for the report and photographs!

Very nice! I would love to be able to take an elk. I have not hunted in the last 3 years. My back has limited me on what I can do.

yes it is a ruger sling, it was for my 10/22, used it cause it held 4 more rounds it was a last minute choice, worked out great though. thanks for the words. Tomme boy, I would help pack out the elk, all you need is some good freinds its about the hunt and being with good people that make a great trip.

Nice cow!

Glad someone found some elk in Colorado. In September I hunted the muzzle loader season West of Delta, went with some friends that have been there the past several years. I saw five elk in nine days, I can see more than that ten minutes from my house. The friends want me to go back next year, but I think I'll save my money.

Again, nice cow, congratulations.

Could you share your load data with us? Also, air cooled or water dropped?

Good eating there. Congrats!

wheel weight, a little tin wire for plumbing, air cooled, 43 grains reloader number 7. it chrono's 1650 back in michigan, and 1750 at 10000 feet, altitude in michigan was 1100 feet. kinda cool the speed difference. the recoil is mild for me and I can get a quick back up shot which i used on this cow. one in the chest and a follow up shot in the neck probly didn't need the second shot, but I didn't have to track her the pic was taken where she dropped. Thanks for the kind words

I did some research and the barrel proof is marlin, my wifes new 30-30 is a remlin not that it matters other than the barrel proof is on the other side of the barrel the way remington does it.

Colorado does have good hunting.

If you don't have a 45-70 lever, you definitely need one. My Marlin Cowboy is light, deadly accurate, and holds nine. It shoots any cast bullet I have tried from 340 to 500 grains and is definitely the Real Deal. Anything from varmints to big bear is on the menu. I simply can't think of another rifle that is as broad spectrum versatile.

Careful, some of your neighbors might hold a vigil for that elk!

Sharpsguy,

Or maybe a RUGER #1 or a Sharps, as long as it's chambered for 45/70 ! [smilie=w:

I have both the Sharps & Ruger #1 in 45/70.
The #1 is faster for me I think because it's so much lighter & shorter.

Ya, I really love that 22" barrel #1 in the woods. It is just sooooo light and fast. Just a joy to carry and use, and like the Marlin, really puts the elk down.

Seems they have a problem standing up to the 465gr WFN cast. [smilie=w:

I have several Sharps in 45-70, as well as a couple of Rolling blocks, and the 1895 Marlin. I prefer the Sharps because they have the adjustable barrel ladder sight and double set triggers--and these are the keys to being able to hit things WAAY out there. I carried one of my Shiloh Sharps in 45-70 to South Africa on my last trip there and took Kudu, zebra, warthog, impala, and blesbok using cast bullets and blackpowder. I actually took two blesbok, one at 307 yards and the other at 451. I was shooting a Lyman 457121 bullet out of air cooled WW and lead at 50/50 and got complete pass through penetration on everything. I have yet to recover a bullet.

A Sharps is hard to beat, and the 45-70 is one of the very best cartridges going. It makes an outstanding combination.

Oh my, Africa. I've been into Montaaaaana once. Being only slightly off the wall with that.

Not much of a traveler and a 100mile trip is something to think about ahead of time and make plans for.

Not even sure I could get to Africa from here. [smilie=1:

CDOC--I may not be able to go to Africa again, but I would sure like to get a Cape Buffalo with a Sharps, cast bullets and blackpowder. After seeing what my 45-110 did on the first two trips and watching the 45-70 on the last trip, my PH said that either rifle had enough horsepower to shoot all the way through a Cape Buffalo.

Elk and our buffalo over here seem to be tailor made for a 480 to 500 grain lead bullet traveling 1200 to 1300 fps. The ones that I have killed and seen killed seem to go down quicker than those shot with faster modern cartridges and jacketed bullets.

Go on You Tube and look up "Zebra shot with black Powder" and you can see the video of my 45-70 working in Africa.

Bovill International don't offer direct flights to Africa?

chg

Hey there, is this the "Bovill" spoken of by U of I and WSU students when they talk about, "Bovill Run"?

If so, Bovill international is FUNNY and your just up the road from me.

Might check, maybe Bovill international connects with Duffer international in Oregon. Maybe you could find a connecting flight to Africa from Duffer.

Must be the same Bovill although I don't what a Bovill Run is. A motorcycle rally, a beer run or a jog? Yes, I was being funny, could have put down Helmer but didn't think of it at the time. I'm on the Clearwater River where it's warmer and cloudy.

chg,

Good to hear from a local!

The "Bovill Run" was the beer run the U of I & WSU students made Friday or Saturday nights.

Sunny up here right now, so Helmer international is likely open.:mrgreen:

Maybe stop in for a "Helmer Burger" between flights on the way down to Duffer. [smilie=1:
