I was given (as in free!) a couple of unopened jugs of IMR 4064 and having never used this powder I was wondering how it compares to the AA 4064 I use for my 45/90 500 grain loads? I would never just assume they are the same but are they similar enough to use the same data if I start at the minimum charge recommended for the Accurate 4064, or are they completely different? I have searched for data for the IMR version and I can find some 45/70 loads on the Hodgdon site but nothing similar for the Accurate 4064 that I could cross-reference.

I asked Accurate about data for their 4064 a few years ago. They suggested starting with loads of their 2520 and working up. In some cartridge combos it is almost an exact replacement. I like it as a powder. I have used IMR 4064 data for starting loads but stop when accuracy deteriorates rather than going for top speeds.

Years ago, when Accurate was located in Tennesse, I inquired about their then new AA4064 and how it compared to IMR 4064. I was told that their 4064 maintained tighter manufaturing tolerences and thus to expect less lot to lot variations than with IMR 4064. I don't know whether that is just hype on their part or if it is true. I have used AA4064 for many years in my 35 Whelen with the cast 358009 and have been very satisfied with the results.
