I traded at guy at the local trap range some shot for some old powder, I know what most of the powder can be used in but I have 2 brand new cans of Herters 100 rifle powder and 3 new cans of Alcan 7 shotgun powder. does anyone know what I can use this in or have any data or tell me a place where I can find data. I checked some of the other powders and they smell fine and I lit some it and it burns fine so I would hate to have to use it for fertilizer.

Alcan 7 is close to Unique. Use starting load for trials. Don't remember about Herters 100. ... felix

I have a Herter's reloading manual at home. Do you have any specific cartridges you are looking for so I can look them up. I seem to remember that the Herter's powder was made by the Swedes in three grades (or buring rates) and was very similar to their powders. I will post more tonight.

Al 7 was my favorite powder when lead was still legal for ducks. Made a great 1 1/2 oz load in 2 3/4" 12ga. Also used it a lot in 38 and 357 with cast bullets. The only bad thing about it is that it is a flake powder and didn't meter very well through my Lyman measure.

Alcan 7 is a super powder for +P 150-160 grain 38 special loads. Highest velocities within .38 pressure range. If it weren't for hazmat problems, I'd be asking you if you want to sell it. But how to ship it?

According to the 3rd revised edition (1970) of the Professional Reloading Data......by George Leonard Herter, the Herters No. 100 is a slow burning powder ideally suited for heavy bullets in large capacity cases. Of course, it is the finest powder made with only virgin materials.

1) The 22-250 doesn't list 100 powder below a 60gr bullet. It is a max of 40.0gr for 3612fps at 47,800 psi.
2) Nothing listed for the .223 Remington Magnum for 100 powder.
3) Nothing listed for the 45-70 for 100 powder.
4) Nothing listed for the 30-30 for 100 powder.
5) .243 Win. 100gr bullet, 42.0gr 100 powder, 3070fps at 49,200psi.
85gr bullet, 44.0gr 100 powder, 3410fps at 49,000psi.
6) .338 Win. 265gr bullet, 69.0gr 100 powder, 2752fps at 53,600psi
200gr bullet, 72.0gr 100 powder, 2956fps at 52,400psi
7) 30-06 220gr bullet, 53.0gr 100 powder, 2400fps at 46,000psi
180gr bullet, 56.0gr 100 powder, 2680fps at 47,000psi
150gr bullet, 60.0gr 100 powder, 2995fps at 46,200psi
8) 50BMG is not listed. Neither is .204 Ruger. Neither is 7.62x39
9) 7.62x54R 220gr bullet, 50.0gr 100 powder, 2410fps at 48,000psi
180gr bullet, 53.0gr 100 powder, 2614fps at 47,600psi
150gr bullet, 54.0gr 100 powder, 2648fps at 47,300psi
10) If the K-31 is the 7.5x54 Schmidt-Rubin,
180gr bullet, 46.0gr 100 powder, 2340fps at 28,900psi
150gr bullet, 51.0gr 100 powder, 2846fps at 28,400psi
The 100 powder is not listed in any handgun caliber in the book, even including the 44 Magnum. Evidently it is just too slow for that.

NOW FOR SOMETHING ENTIRELY DIFFERENT:
There is a .200 Herter Ram Magnum cartridge listed in the book. It has a double-bottleneck. To quote, "The .300 Herter Ram Magnum has a double 30 degree shoulder. This double shoulder creates a turbulence in the shoulder of the cartridge case that concentrates the force of the powder gases on the rear of the bullet for a longer period of time and give nore velocity than the same powder charge with the same bullet, shot in the same rifle, with a conventional shoulder."

Has anyone ever seen one? I have seen the .401 Herters Magnum, but I have never seen this one.

Duke76, the "Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook" 3rd edition has load data in the handgun section. There are a number of calibers that have load data. Alcan 7 is listed as AL-7 in the manual...Ray
