So i just got mine, and here are some observations.

There have been talks about broken extractors, i dont think that is so.
I think they get lost when the bolt is out of the rifle. Here's why:

See?
The extractor will just fall of when it reaches the opposite side.

Some have asked about dismantling the bolt.
It is pretty much standard Mauser. As this is simpler it is rather crude.

Retract the firing pin and grab it with a pair of pliers.
Unscrew the round nut and it is in pieces.

If you want to go further then a special tool has to be made.

My gun is as new :)
Only 8 spent cases in the Remington package that followed it home to me.
"Wear" on the bolt, notice colour case hardening

Thanks for that. I have not been able to disassemble the bolt of my model 35.

I would have dearly loved the .25-20 the dealer had. What put me off was a new caliber in the stable of Jeff that I needed to buy dies, cases (getting harder to find) and a mould. I bought the .30-30 and was fortunate enough to be given dies and brass and I have plenty of moulds to suit.

Wow - I have been wanting one of those for a long time. I have never seen one in such good condition. They are mostly pretty beat when I encounter them. I hope it is a good shooter for you. That RCBS boolit and black powder should be the perfect matchup for it!

So i have shot @100 shots with the rifle. Mixed loadings i have bought for the brass. Man is this a small little teeny weeny tackdriver:happy dance:

I have noticed that the firing pin will recoil backwards and the round bolt at the end will end up a little askew. At first i thought the tip of the firing pin had broken off, but now i just find it anoying. Happens once in 15-20 shots. The pin can't be adjusted and protrudes "a lot".

Anyone else experienced this?

Notice the (non lack of) machine marks, goes to show that it was a poor mans work horse.

In 1932 the #26 25-20 cost 55 Swedish Kroner.
Dont know the exchange rate at the time but it is $8.45 at todays rate.
The #35 in 30-30 cost 63 Swedish Kroner~$9.68.
A #45 in 45-70 would set you back 70 SeKr~$10.76

When i put the bolt back together on mine i set it so the nut that screws on the firing pin rod is just flush. While working on a project where i am using a model 25 bolt in another gun i was having some issues with pearced primers and i took up an extra turn on the nut. As it turns out one turn for me is too much and then i dont get consistant friring. But it may work for you.

I've always thought the .25-20 to be awfully under rated as a cartridge. That's a nice looking rifle, bet it handles and points very well too. Sure wouldn't mind owning such a rifle.

Chicken Thief , could you please possibly post a hand drawing of your claw extractor with specific dimensions so that I could make one?
My gun is missing the extractor and I suspect that finding one would be nearly impossible.
I have a lathe and milling machine and should be able to machine one if I could get dimensions.
Thanks!

I ground one up myself using a bit of tool steel. Took about 2 hours of careful, slow work. Actually BETTER than the original.

Thanks Jeff! Can I assume from the pic that the longitudinal curvature of the original is not necessary?

Correct. That's how long the tool steel was and the extractor worked so I left it that length. Trust me. After you spend two hours making it and find it works you leave it be.

Do these guns exist here in the states? I never saw or heard of them but then again I have lived a very sheltered life concerning anything other than remington or winchester!

nekshot,

They do exist, I bought one at an auction in Nevada, MO. It was missing the extractor, (probably lost by lookyloos at the auction). Simpsons usually has a few on the internet in the four calibers they were made in.

I used a piece of bandsaw blade to make my extractor. Once I got the hook formed, I soldered a piece of steel on it for the lug. It works and until it breaks I am not going to file or grind on out of a solid chunk of steel.

Most of my cases are necked down .32-20.

I was told by an acquaintance that had a couple of the bolt actions and several of the rolling blocks that an outfit called the Buffalo Brothers in Phoenix had imported a whole bunch of such rifles from Sweden. The bolts had been removed from the bolt guns and the extractors had fallen out of them, since the only thing keeping them on the bolt is the bolt being in the receiver raceway. He said he had to look for a while to find those that still had the extractors; apparently the loose extractors were picked off the floor and tossed into the shipping containers with the loose bolts and boltless rifles and the works left for the importer to sort out.

He offered me one of those .25-20 rifles, and I was tempted. But it shot high for me and was too pristine to modify with replacement sights. I've seen a slightly larger one in .32-40 at a gun show; kind of odd to see foreign rifles preferentially chambered in American calibers.

Simpsons listed a model 45 in 45-70 today and it already sold they don't last long. I have the 32-20, 30-30 and 45-70 versions and i love them all. someday i will get ahold of the 25-20 and complete the set.

I am glad to see some current conversation going on about these fine rifles. They are not seen very often for sale and they go quickly. Gunbroker recently had a model 25, 26, and 35 that sold in the $400. range. I purchased a model 35 six months ago that did not have a bolt. It had a replacement extrator that came with it. Do any of you know where a bolt may be?

There is NO way I am going to shoot a .45-70 in one of these rifles. They weigh nothing.

i shoot a 400 gr PP boolit with a modest load of 3031 and it is really not that bad. It is accurate and ilike it. there are many ways to load the 45-70 from mild to oh my god. all of my 45-70s (Encore, Buffalo Classic and a Bikail double) tend to be on the light side so i have formulated my loads to suit. there are plenty of reduced power recipies to take advantage of with this round.

Beautiful gun, thanks for posting that. I have a 32-20 and I always wondered if my extractor was original or not. The bolt doesn't exactly cycle smoothly and it feels better without the extractor in it. Mine looks exactly like those though. Mine is also marked 30-30 on the import stamp but it just ain't so. I love mine but I can't imagine shooting a 45-70.

I shot mine without the extractor once and it shot oil all over my glasses by the way.
