I want to try out a Lyman Neck Expanding M die. I am looking at ordering a .30 cal die but am unsure which to get, 30 cal short or long. Ideally I'd like to get which ever die is going to cover all or most of my cartidges.
The .30 cals I currently reload for:
.308 win
.30-06
7.5 MAS
future plans for a 30 carbine.
What is the physical difference between the short and long die? Which would best suit my needs?

Thanks

Lee's Universal Expanding die only flares the casemouth, it doesn't expand the case neck...

Lyman says:
Rifle Neck Expanding M Die 30L 30-06 (7.62 x 63mm), 308 Win, 307 Win, 300 Rem Ultra Mag, 300 Weatherby Mag, 300 Winchester Mag, 7.62 x 54 Russian

I use the very same die for 7.62x53R(54R) and for .30-06, so you'll be fine with it too with .308win. That 7.5 MAS I'm not too sure though...

The .30 short M dies have a longer center stud to hold the same expander for working with short cartridges. It's better for the 30 Carbine, 32/20, etc. but can also serve just as well for the longer cartridges. I use my short M for both 30 Carbine and 30-06 but the "long" size wouldn't work with the short cartridges. Get the "short" and have greater flexibility!
