Is anyone using or has used the 270 win with cast bullets for deer hunting. I have a nice 150gr RCBS mold and was wondering about using this bullet for the small deer here in MO.

Well your not getting much help here so I'll chime in even though I can't offer you any real world expierence with cast in the 270. Killed many deer with jacketed in one though.
If you cast that boolit 50/50 with a touch of tin I think you'll find I pretty accurate if you hold your velocity below 1800 fps. I personally would start with 16 gr of 2400 and work up in .5 gr increments until groups started to open up. That alloy will expand at MO deer shooting ranges at whatever velocity your groups start to open up. When shooting these you'll find them very pleasent with virtually no recoil, don't be fooled, if you put one of these through a deers lungs it won't go very far.
Hope this helps. Woody

Plenty of stories of various 7mm on deer. Since the 270 Win is practically the same size bullet I'd compare. From all accounts I've read 7mm works just fine.

150 grains of lead is obviously enough mass. Just need to get it on target. Expansion would be a plus but not the end all solution. If you hit a rib bone the SP bullet should open up just fine. WW plus some 50/50 solder should work fine. Or 50/50 WW to pure lead water dropped would be great. In my limited experience with 270 and that RCBS 150 gr bullet it likes to be hard. Water dropped is the easiest way to get a pliable alloy that will still shoot.

Wolfer and GabbyM thank you for your help. I have killed deer with the 270 and J-words. It is like they were hit by lighting. I have also use the 30/30 with cast bullets with good results. It is just I have never gone down in cal with cast bullets. I have been wanting to try the 270 Win and the 6.5x55 with cast, but not if they were not working for others.
I was taught only to shoot a standing deer or one walking, so bullet placement is much easlier.
Water dropped? , sounds like a good suggestion as well

I gave up shooting running deer a long time ago.

I'll never stand point again, for folks pushing bush.

I'd rather hunt quiet like and "honk" at them to get them to stop, then just put one where it counts, and take home meat!

I too have a 270Win, and have a few moulds for it now to try out.

I have a light Lovern design I want to try PP in, as well, an oversized 6.5CM mould I traded for. Geargnasher broke some ground on that one.

I hunt by finding a good area and sitting. I forgot about the 6.5 cruise missle I have that mould as well.
Hey, nanuk every tried that 45 cal 300gr RCBS mould?

not yet Bill, far too many things going on right now for that one.

I hope when it warms up some, I can melt some alloy, and get a few of my 45 moulds hot and bothered!

They shoot with deadly accuracy out of the #1 in 270 with the 150gr rcbs and 2400.

You'd be better served with Re7, 4198 or 3031 than 2400. Even 4759 should get you near 1900 fps with 1.5" MOA using water dropped 50/50.
