I just purchased a Puma lever action in .357 Mag with a 16 inch barrel. I want to shoot cast 158 or 180 gr boolets in this rifle. I like to have good velocity without leading, if possible. Can this be accomplished with a plain base boolit, or will I have to go to a gas check? I need to purchase them from a commercial caster, any recommendations? Thanks, Art

Yes I believe it can be done with a plain base bullet. I shoot a 357 mag lever gun and shoot the 200 gr Plain Base Flat point and Trun cone to a pretty good velocity with no leading.

I got them from NBC a while ago. Way before there reputation for delivering in a timely manner went to crap.

I don't know the velocity but it gives a pretty good kick! :D

I use 160 gr. PB boolits in my Marlin 1894 .357 magnum at around 1600 fps. with good accuracy and no leading. My alloy is 75% WW and 25% linotype, sized .358" and lubed with 50/50 Alox/beeswax.

Just got back from the range and shooting 358429 Kieth type (175 gr.) over 12 gr. of 2400, that chronoed at 1650fps in my 94 win. No leading, recoil lite, and if Ne. allowed a 357 in a rifle for deer, would not hesitate to use it on same. (Ne allows 357 in handgun, but not in rifle-guess they figure handgunners are more competant than riflemen.)
