Hi guys. I just got my Lee 7.62x39 Russian in the mail today. It came with two decapper rods. One is close to .308 and the other .311. Now what do I do if my boolit don't fit because the neck is to small? My first batch of boolits are sized a little over .311 and I plan on making them .313. If some one could help me here it would be great.

Thanks.[smilie=b:

I would think a lyman m die would work. If memory serves mine in 30 cal sizes at 309 on the small part and the wider part with the bigger flare is around 313 or so.

It is common to have to use an additional die to load cast in most rifles. Lee has a Universal Expander Die but it only flares the case mouth. Need a Lyman M die or the RCBS equivalant.

In a pinch, I've been known to set a steel ball about 3/8 diameter on the case mouth and give it a tap to flare it a bit, but you really should spring for an "M" die. Not infrequently they show up for sale on evilBay. A .313 boolit can be squeezed in to a .311 case mouth using the trick I mentioned, but it does not do the boolit any good.

Thanks you guys. So what size M die do I want ? The .30 cal? Sorry guys but this part is new to me. Going .313 with the boolit how tight should the neck tension be..311,.312..???? lol..

That part I am not sure of. I believe in a thread from yesterday someone put the diameters of all the m dies. And I believe 30 cal was the only one that did the size you are looking for. Also there is a short and long m die. You will need to figure out just which one you need there.

Stick a plain ol' pair of needlenose pliers in the neck and twist. That'll work until you decide what to do. Me, I like the Lee Universal Expander Die much more than the Lyman M die. The M die bells the case mouth, yes, but it also re-sizes the case neck.

In the sense that it expands the neck, yes it does. Expands it to a proper fit for your boolit, if you're using the right size expander plug in the M die.

M-die nominally for 7.62x39, which is a .30 caliber expander. Probably too small for your boolit.

M-Die for .32-20, which should give you the right case mouth for a .313 boolit.

I have made my own expander mandrels for M-dies on my little bench lathe.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking. I want some tension but not so much as to reform the boolits. I was told to go shot some rounds off and see what the size of the ID in the neck was, so that is what I'm doing today.Want to make sure it will chamber in my rifle.

i generally go for 2 thousandths neck tension to start.

Thanks for all the help guys. Didn't want to wait for a expander so I made one.Works great.

Shank of a spade bit! Good work.

In my single shots, I strive for maybe only .001 or even .0005 smaller than the boolit, and I don't crimp. That might cause problems in anything else, because the boolit could move in or out during the action cycle. Like everything in engineering, it's all about tradeoffs.

I use a 31 caliber M die for the 7.62X39, 303 Brit, 7.65 Argie, and 7.62X54R.

Exactly. The Lyman M die comes in 30, 31 and 32 calibers, all in both "Long" and "Short" versions. I'd guess 31 caliber is what you want, or get a 32 and turn it down with a drill (preferably drill press) and a file and/or sandpaper/crocus cloth.

I had an M die which resized cases! A couple of years ago I bought the Lyman .50-70 die set and the M die in that set had a die body too small to allow a .50-70 case to enter without sizing the case smaller!! Lyman made good on the die.

Edit: Guess I should have read all the way to the end before posting. Oh well...
