I oven heat treated my first batch of boolits,
now I have to be patient for 7 or so days.

Wheel weights with about .3% tin for fill out
cooked at 400 for an hour and into snowy water.
Should we start a pool on what the BHN will be?

Only if we get to see a video of you jump off your roof into that snowy water [smilie=l:

I dont have a big enough bucket!
That would be a heck of a cannon ball though:)

I get 20 to 21 BHN by water dropping, so you should get more by heat treating. I'm guessing 23 to 24.

Assuming an accurate thermometer and an actual 400 degree oven.
Assuming an average batch of WW.
Assuming 1% or a tick under Sn.

In 7 full days . . . 16, possibly 17 BHN.

Assumptions are correct

Day 1-(24 hours) = 17.4 bhn

intend to test everyday for 7 -8 days
(I threw extras in the batch just for testing purposes.)

I'm guessing that cbrick fellow has been at this more than a couple weeks! :bigsmyl2:

Ah, the LEE tester.

The Lee tester seems to read a bit high, over time reading the posts here often the highest readings reported are from the LEE. It could be because of the users reading the results but it doesn't matter as long as the readings are consistent.

yeah, I still aint sure what to think of it as far as accuracy. at this point still looking for consistency.
I dont much care what the number is as long as it does what it is suppose to do.
I do not like using the lee tester though

Jim, it does't matter if you have a sample and your tester says it's 18 and a lab test says it's 15. What matters is that your tester always says 18 with that sample. None of the boolit BHN testers are lab grade equipment, none of us could afford them if they were. Most all of the testers are fairly consistent as long as the user is consistent in it's use.

yup

Day 3 - 19.2 BHN
Its getting harder.
Anyone tried alloying Vi*gra in their boolits http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v313/James64/Smilies/1023.gif

Question, when HT'ing in the oven did you use an oven thermometer or just use the dial on the oven?

Just for S&G, you should continue testing some samples for a few months....you'll see the hardness slowly increase for about a year. I've found the peak hardness at about 6-9 months.

28 bhn ? my guess

Rick

Yes I did, this was a new to me oven, so I ran some test runs with a regular old
oven thermometer and I have a digital temp meter from my mechanic days. It has probes
for liquid, surface and air temps. Amazingly enough for a 20$ oven,
the knob dial is right on the money.

Day 5 23.8 BHN
Day 6 22.8 BHN (different sample)
Day 7 24.8

you got some good WWs. what caliber.

Jim,

I am assuming you carefully sorted your WWs to include only clip-ons. Is that correct?

popper,
these are the 7mm hunter from a recent group buy (NOE)
Edd,
yeah, I always sort out the stickies. I have way more WW metal than pure, so I keep an eye out for 'em

Day 8, holding at 24.8

Alrighty then!
These boolits stabilized at around 24 BHN.
I loaded up ten in front of 51 grains of H4350.
Manual says should be in the 2700fps range
Gas checked and sized at .284, lubed with Blue Angel.
First 5 shots kinda wild.
next 3 in 1.25" at 100 yards, last 2 in 1" @100
Perfect entry on the paper- no ovals or key holes.
280 Remington on a FN 98 Mauser, beautiful lube star on
the muzzle, and NO leading at all

I cant wait to try the copper infused versions!
Next is to test expansion/weight retention, but the weather needs
to warn up so I'm not shootin into a ice block

Sounds good, I may be in Kalispell this summer on my Gold Wing

I've got some long term hardness tests going on right now, one is 14 months old and last time I check it, the hardness had stabilized.
