Green Mountain are selling 41 cal 15" 1-in-20 twist pistol barrel for $80. I'm thinking of getting one and fitting it to a 303 chamber to form a 41/303 carbine. It would have a suppressor to bring the overall gun length to legal specs.

The question is, what cast boolit weight would a 1-in-20 barrel stabilize and what effective velocity should be expected? The 41/303 would have a 1.77" case so case capacity would be quite substantial. This would be for my pig gun project which currently has a rusted 303 bore and can only shoot paper patched boolits which would still be on the cards but I wan't to be able to do both.

Here are some factory twist rates to give you something to go on.

41 Magnum - 1 in 18 1/2" . . . . . Marlin 1894
44 Magnum - 1 in 20" . . . . . . . . Thompson/Center Carbine
44 Magnum - 1 in 38" . . . . . . . . Ruger Carbine; Marlin 336, 1894
444 Marlin - 1 in 38" . . . . . . . . . Marlin 336; 444S

Up to 15 inch is legal for handgun here, 16+ for rifles, what is the requirement there?

Thanks. We only have an overall rifle length requirement. We may not hunt with hand guns at all nor may we use them for self defence. Sound crazy? Believe it or not, we don't need them for self defence! Hand guns are only used for target and club shooting. Occasionally some twit uses one in a hold up and even a homicide. But that's rare. Talk about paradise on earth.

So, the 1-in-20 twist may be OK? I'm thinking of 300gr boolits top end. That has to be enough for big pigs with an attitude.
