I stopped by my local scrapyard to pick up what was left of a crumpled up lead sheet. I had already hacked off 275lbs this summer and I figured there was maybe 400lbs left. Well the scale kept going up, and up,and up. Stopped at 984lbs.:-?
I wasn't planning on this much but, I guess it is time to start smelting. I needed more WW than pure but this is what was left.

What are you paying for lead from a scrap yard? My son is in a fraternity and one of the alumni owns a scrap yard. He is charging us .53 a pound. Seems like a good deal but never bought from a salvage yard before.

Best I can find at my local yards is .40 a # for "dirty" lead which is mostly COWW and .60 a # for "clean" which runs the gammit of forms of pure lead from sheeting to some weird looking HUGE weights.

Try an add on craigslist!!! Picked up 150lbs of plumbers lead in original ignots and 8 lbs of mystery metal for $25 awhile ago and 80lbs of sorted COWW for 24$ the same week.

The way this country is bowing to the "greenies" in 5 years we will be lucky to find lead anywhere.

You can put me down on your list for another delivery there 40Super when the time comes. Your past delivery I already blew thru 1/3 of it. Problem with having good lead Sir. ._>:Fire: <more fun!

I would never sell any of the lead I get. I plan to hoard, hoard, hoard.

Maybe if I fell into a great deal on a few tons I might sell but otherwise, I am a keep it all kind of guy.

I know is may or be popular with some here but I am looking to keep a viable supply for myself for the future.

The stuff I got is clean soft lead. I plan on buying 100 pounds at a time every time my son comes back from Portales.

I melted down the last batch on Friday along with some range lead I scrounged from my gun club.

I plan on getting a thousand pounds or so. It might be a good bartering commodity if ever needed.

Well, I figure I can't take it with me when I drop dead some day( the casket will end up way too heavy), so I might as well sell a bit of it as I get some. I have about 500lbs of good range lead already(I can get several 5 gal pails every spring), plus quite a bit of good old time WW and SOWW. I have enough to last me a while and can replentish it as well for now so I don't feel a need to hoard everything. Might as well get it into the hands of others that don't have good sources.

COWW = Clip On Wheel Weights - Used on steel wheels, Harder alloy

SOWW = Stick On Wheel Weights - used on aluminum fancy wheels, much softer lead, almost pure pead

I was looking at some new SOWW at Autozone. It said lead-free.

They make SOWW in Zinc too. Can't trust them completely, but they are marked Pb or Z or Zn at least that I've found.

My SOWW has been testing at 8.5 BHN on my cabin tree tester. Not as close to pure as I had hoped.

my last pot ful of sowws I didn't test, but by the golde hue and grainy look as it cooled I could tell it had a little bit of tin and antimony in it. The ingots caved in from shrinking like pure ,just you could tell it isn't true pure.
