Looking for feedback on Beretta Nano. Any issues with cast?

My wife and son both have one and cast is all we shoot in them other than some factory ammo for break in.

Shot 250 J-words over the weekend. Few FTF and FTE with 115 grain Blazers in the reloadable brass case. When I switched to the heavier 125 grain loads in Premium ammunition the failures went away. Cleaned it throughly, and shot 150 rounds of RCBS's 125 RNGC (sized .356) over 5.0 grains of Unique. No Failures at all and not a hint of leading. Accuracy was minute of bad guy, as good as factory ammo anyways.

We have been using the Lee 12 TC. No gas checks with that one.

Next session will be with Lyman 124 TC PB (sized @ .357) over 5.0 grs of Unique. Really liking this micro-nine. [smilie=1: Wife likes it too, so I may have to hide it from her.:kidding:

After a grand total of 1100 rounds, 750 of which were cast, the recoil spring assembly gave up the ghost. The thin flange containing the spring shattered. Tying up the firearm.

Contacted Beretta and they sent me a new recoil spring assembly, free of charge, no questions asked! However, I have lost confidence, as to it's intended use as a concealed carry piece. Is it a bad design or just a defective part? Anyone, with similar experience?

Given how small this gun is I think you would be well advised to change out the recoil spring every thousand or so rounds anyway. What's the power level of your ammo? I load 9mm to standard .38 Special/hot .380 Auto level for my Kel-Tec PF-9 and it eats it right up with no problems. If I was even loading it to the level of factory ball I think it would not do so well.

My standard load is 5.0 grains of Unique with 125 grain boolit. Not over the top, IMO. Beretta has / had a video out on their website where they shot 1000 continuous factory rounds without dissembling, cleaning or lubing. Not one issue was encountered. I would expect longer life when proper maintenance is done.

A+ on changing the recoil spring often on all mini guns with short barrels of around 3"

That 5.0 grains Unique sounds like it is pretty stout for that little gun even though I'm sure its within published data. I always got more recoil and larger groups with Unique in the 9mm so I stopped using it.

I am a mite reluctant to carry any pistol smaller than "compact" in harm's way. By this, I'm referring to models down to the sizes of the SIG P-225, 228, 229, or 239--the Glock 19 or 23--or 1911A1 Commander. Feed geometry gets a little kinky and extreme in the tinyguns, and running them at full tilt exaggerates their potential crankiness. Truth to tell, the makers are taking some of their designs in places the designs were likely not meant to travel, and do so under the pressure of marketing department directives or consumer demand--which aren't always mechanically sound concepts. The '5.0 grains of Unique x 125 grain bullet' load isn't a softball, but isn't excessive either--in a steel-framed full-sized 9mm. You start swapping in alloy receivers--short slides/strokes--short butts/magazines--and the game can change.

Very true! That's why I carry .38 Special level loads in my mini 9's: 122 grain truncated cone at 900 fps.
