Finally got around to taking my "new" Savage 99 DL (.308) to the range. I was a happy camper when I was the only bidder and got it for $325, happier still when I saw that the dealer went overboard in describing and picturing the "stock damage". And she shoots like a dream.

Another 99 for me.

So you have more than one I take it?

This last gunshow didn't see a Savage 99 under 595 asking price. I'd say you did real well.

yeah, the prices on 99's around here have been nuts the last few years. I'm on #4 myself
and its at the "smiths" getting a full blown custom build.

Jim ( its at the "smiths" getting a full blown custom build.) It just ain't right to leave us 99 fans hanging like that.
What kind of custom build are we talking about???????

I have a '50s .300 and a 1939 build .250 to go with the .308.

The last .308 I looked at (before this one) was a piece of trash and the asking price was $600. Admittedly, 99s aren't real common in TX.

Complete go through on the action, inside and out, lots of metal fitting work, make the bolt fit like it should, straightening the lines, tighten the lever, trigger job
including bushing all pins to remove slop, new cut rifle barrel, all new wood, custom scope bases, and I tried calling yesterday about a tang sight set up
but he didnt answer. Pretty much what you would do to a 98 Mauser but to a lowly lever gun. This rifle didnt have the window for the cartridge counter, he's
adding that feature too. It is the lever safety version.
It'll be really sweet if I live long enough see it, I have not seen this rifle since 2006 :(

Ever seen the one Bill Ruger had done with the flame checkering job?

Someday, when I hit the lotto, the other 99's I'd love to have is a 358 Win, and a 38-55.

I was at an auction a couple years ago and there was a like new 300 M99. It went for 600 bucks and worth every penny, but as I already had a 300, I wasn't real interested.
This auction was right in the heart of the big ammo and component shortage, and the guy had probably 20,000 rounds of various ammo. There was zero 300 savage ammo so I ask him why. He told me he had never shot the gun, that his dad had bought it in 54 and promtly shot himself in the foot with it, so never shot it again. He inherited it from his dad and had no use for it as he owned several other rifles. I find this out after it sold, but supposedly it had been shot 4 times. lol

Running across a cheap 375 wouldn't be bad either. lol

They loose time by people stopping by the shop to see how things are going. ;-)

At some point in the next 15 to 20 years, A guy might want to mention it wouldn't hurt to hurry a little. lol

They may be waiting for you to forget about it, these things are getting harder to find as time goes by. lol

I actually converted a newer .243 to .375 Winchester 7 or 8 years ago. Got the barrel from Numrich, magazine spool from another source, then spent a while with a die grinder to get the rims to clear the rear of the magazine well all the way 'round.

Shoots like a dream, and has several deer to its credit. Am wanting to shoot cast, but with the .368" bore diameter am afraid it may not work out all that well.

I love Savage 99s and have three of them now planning on getting more. Took my second "small bore" cast bullet deer this year using a 99E in .308 I rescued (the one in my avatar). Great rifle, handles, carries and shoots nicely.

Gonna get better sight set ups for my old 99EG in .300 and 99A in .250. Am actively pursuing a 99R in .300, hopefully soon. I'd love to have a .358 one.

Our local hardware store/gun shop has a nice post mil 99F in .300 Savage. Only $449.00 with some kind of 3x9 scope on it. Real nice blueing and does not look all beat up.

Was the F the lightweight variant? I'm still learning the codes, seems the vast majority I find are EGs in .300 Savage (which I bought one of, nice handling and pointing gun). I want an R variant now, the heavier barrel with the round forend. They were supposedly the best shooters.

My 99E in .308 I payed $300 for, but it was pretty rough. Some clean up and refinishing the stock made her look OK and it is a good shooter with cast. It had a cheap scope in Lyman rings on it when I bought it, the scope was obviosuly a Japanese scope, but had the Savage logo on it, I heard it was a factory package deal in the '60s or '70s. It wears a much nicer old Denver Redfield now.

my understanding is the later years, yes the F was a featherweight.
I had one in 308 and try as I might, it would not shoot good enough for me.
It would group under an inch, you just never could count on
where the group was gonna be.
I think the early versions the F stood for something else

I can't Jim, I've got four .300 Savage rifles now. A Savage 99EG from 1956, a Remington 722 from 1949, a Remington 700 Classic and a limited run (300 pieces) Remington 7600.
