What do you all think about PacNor barrels for shooting cast boolits and should I go with a chrome moly or stainless barrel?

Thanks,
MJ

Pac-nor makes good barrels

MJ, across the board, barrel stainless steel typically formulated has no nickel component, and therefore is easier to machine than is 4140 which does contain nickel. So....does it make a difference? Not really for cast, so maybe completed/installed total price should be your better option. I prefer odd number of lands when given a choice at same price. ... felix

Pac Nor barrels are button rifled and hand lapped.
I watched them do it. Pac Nor is 80 miles from here.
We have had good luck with Pac Nor.....dale

There are a lot of good barrel makers out there including Pac-Nor. It's pretty much a matter of who can supply you with the twist, contour etc that you want without a year's wait.

Right now,I am helping a friend develop loads for a quick-twist Pac-Nor barrel, for a .223 on a Rem 700 action. It is a 3 groove barrel ,I believe he told me. The barrel has done well, but no better than other barrels I have worked with. We are shooting jacketed bullets, so maybe it isn't a proper assessment. I have had a number of Shilen's barrels and have yet to have one that didn't shoot very well. For what it's worth (and that probably ain't much) my favorite barrels are Lilja. Most of the higher grade barrels are going to be hard to tell the difference in. If shooting cast is the primary role, Badger is good, or even Green Mountain, if you are building a hunting rifle. One custom builder i know absolutely swears by Broughton barrels. I've never owned one. ..:coffee:

I'm considering a 7mm PAC-NOR barrel because of the twist and number of groove selection but I'm wondering if I can get a .276"/.284" bore/groove configuration.

Pac Nor has a good reputation among match and service rifle competitors. Pac Nor is one of the top five choices for re-barreling a M1892, M1903A3, M1, M1A for serious vintage service rifle competition. A Pac Nor barrel will put'em in the X-ring. SS vs. CM: no difference in accuracy, SS cost more than CM, CM must be blued and may rust, SS no need to blue and will rust in only extreme conditions or neglect. A barrel made of either material may outlast you if you are shooting mostly lubricated cast bullets and clean with a rod bore guide. Good luck.

MJ, a 0.008 total land height would be an industry standard, and with a fixed button process even more so in probability. A simple phone call would verify that. ... felix

They made me a 35 Cal. barrel, 35 Rem for my 700 bench rifle, 1-12 twist, It shot under 3/4 in. with 300 gr. bullets-Cast, Also got a 308 with a 1-13 twist on my Rem. 17 Enfield that is a super shooter.

I have several PacNor bbl rifles, but the only one that has ever seen a lead bullet was some test rounds for my 404jeffery. They make really good value bbls for the money. My gunsmith used to always go Douglas match for projects where a customer was not specific. After making a couple rifles for me using PacNor, he has since switched. He tells me finish inside & out are better than Douglas.

Yeah, in .30 caliber... more like .277/.284 in 7mm. I sent them an email... I like to get everything in writing these days.

Actually, I'd prefer .275/.284!

If you have the time and money to wait, my barrel choice would be Bartlein. http://www.bartleinbarrels.com
If you can dream up what you want, he will do it EXACTLY. ... felix

During testing my new Pac-Nor in 6.5-.284 using 140-gr Berger VLDs, I got 1/3-MOA 300-yard 5-shot groups. That's more than adequate.

Talk to Penney or Wayne at Pac-Nor. I think they're sixteen weeks out on production right now.

I've never owned a Pac-Nor barrel, though I have shot a couple, shot well, I DO own Lilja(3 grove, 30 cal), Broughton 5C (.243/6mm) and Krieger(single-point cut) in .223 They are all great tubes when installed properly, I'd be hard pressed to say any of the four(Pac-Nor, Lilja, Broughton/North Mfg, & Krieger) was better than the other. There are obviously several others out there that I don't own Bartlein & Obermeir come immediatly to mind that I've never shot but may people say good things about. In my experience the Douglas & Shillen match or air gauged barrels CAN be good, I have seen a higher percentage of them that were only mediocre though.
