I've seen references to people using Alliant's 2400 in the .45-70 but I can't find any reference data. I'm interested in shooting a 405gr boolit out of my Marlin Guide Gun at less than full tilt velocities.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

TIA

In the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, Third, Edition, under the 1895 Marlin section:

Starting load for a 420 gr. cast bullet is 21 grains, expected velocity is 1252
Top load is 25.7 grains, expected velocity is 1490

You could start with the starting load listed and work up.

For my trapdoor I load 21gn 2400 with a packing popcorn filler with boolits from 500 to 530gn.
Average velocity is 1270 fps which regulates well with the Buffington sights at least to 500 yards.
I hope to find out if it will stay that way out to 800 as Lord willing I hope to shoot one at the Quiggley next year.

A 24 grain charge of 2400 is close to a 70 grain charge of black powder in velocity.

I shoot 25 grains of 2400 with the Lee 405 grain Hollow Base .459 bullet in my guide gun and it works great and I use no filler I do not believe in using them.

Thanks for the info!

I believe I'll start at 22.0gr and work up to 25.0 or so.

that data also calls for a tuft of dacron.
i use 22.5 grs and a tuft [1.5gr] of dacron under either a 405 or a 435gr boolit.
i tried the eco-peanuts and they didn't work out for me.

I use no filler and get great accuracy and good ignition. 2400 is not position sensitive according to C.E. Harris which is why I used it for most all of my rifle loadings.

I found data in an old Lyman manual that I forgot I had. Maybe I need to loan it to Alliant since they replied to my request on their website saying that they don't have any data for 2400 in the .45-70. :veryconfu

The data in your old Lyman book would not be from Alliant but it would be from Herculies.
That is likely the issue

slightly off topic but I'll run it out and see if anyone can help. I have posted this in CB Loads, your favorite cartridge with no suggestions so perhaps it doesn't exist:

Hello CastBoolits denizens.

I am looking for a source of published rifle (particularly 30-30) loads with AP70N (hodgdons Universal).

Certainly I have read on here that there is a one to one swap possible with unique. I guess I always like to have a published source to point to and say - that is where the load is.

I have done a good search on this forum, google, the ADI and Hodgdons guides with no luck. ADI does list an AP70N load for the .308 and .303. I have the An Australians Reloading Guide by Barry Wilmot but no luck in there, full jacketed loads only.

I would like to purchase one of the big books if it had this information - Richards Lees, Lyman, Hornday etc.

Has anyone ever seen this data published?

thank you in advance.

I've never used Universal but Hodgdon's own burn rate chart puts it next to Unique.

http://www.hodgdon.com/burn-rate.html

My SWAG would be that they're not "interchangeable" but that load data for one would make a good guideline for the other.

Yes, I am heading that way, start at a min Unique load.

For interest's sake, attached in the ADI reloader advice - I have written to them a couple of times and had very good feedback.
