I noticed in The Lyman book it doesn't have hp-38 in it. Is it safe to say you can use hp-38 powder wherever Win 231 powder is listed. I'm loading 9mm 125gr. RN cast. Any information would be appreciated.

I have seen numerous publications state that HP38 and 231 are different lots of the same powder. I use them interchangeably. Like any other new powder, I work up loads. I actually don't get anywhere near max loads, if I want that much speed I change powders.

Thats me i usually go in between. I use hp-38 in 38 special and like the way it flows in the lee auto charge and was wanting to try it in the 9mm and just seen win 231 in the lyman manual. Thanks for the info.

It's been said before that it's the same powder. I've used them both in several different calibers and found no difference at all so I think it's true. And i use the load data interchangeably.

Same powder, different label. And that's a fact.

As far as I am concerned these 2 powders, Win. 231 and Hodgon HP-38, are about the same as burn rate goes. Over the years I used the same load data with either powder in my .38 spcl. wadcutter loads.Robert

In years gone by, I have encountered significant differences between WW-231 and HP-38, but since somewhere around 2008, both powders are identical.
HOWEVER, the published data from years prior to this may very markedly. I strongly urge all who use these fine powders to check Hogdon's excellent website and confirm that your load is within safe parameters. I have a bunch of older manuals and some of the data varies by 10-15%. Using a peak load from a fast lot and transiting to a slower one is not bad, but going the other way, from slow to fast could result in a blown case or a bulged cylinder.
